Man dies from shooting in North San Pedro

A shooting overnight on the north end of Ambergris Caye turned murder today after police discovered the body of thirty-six-year-old Rudolph Eric Pitts. Just before nine p.m. on Tuesday, twenty-two-year-old Edgar Rene Lopez was transported to the San Pedro Polyclinic with multiple gunshot wounds to the head, left arm and shoulder. Before being airlifted to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, Lopez revealed to police that he was walking along with his friend, Pitts, ten miles north of San Pedro Town when they were fired upon by three men who came out from behind some bushes. Lopez managed to escape, but it was not until just before two p.m. today that a police search led to the discovery of Pitts' body in the area. He had been shot four times. In a late evening interview with Deputy Regional Commander for Eastern Division North, Superintendent Reymundo Reyes, he says that a motive has not yet been established.

A male person identified as 36 year-old Rudolph Pitts was found dead on Wednesday, September 6th shortly after 1PM in Northern Ambergris Caye. Shooting in northern Ambergris Caye leaves one person injured and another missing
The official report from police indicates that on Tuesday, around 8PM, Lopez along with a friend were walking on a back street on the island, when three men approached them from the nearby bushes and fired several shots at them. An injured Lopez managed to flee from the area and was later assisted and transported to the polyclinic. Contrary to the police report, which gave the impression that the shooting took place in downtown San Pedro, an eyewitness claims that the incident happened near a resort in northern Ambergris Caye. According to the eyewitness, Lopez had just started working in the maintenance department of the resort. The eyewitness stated that when he was shot, Lopez ran to the staff rooms seeking refuge and help. He was quickly taken in a pick-up truck to the polyclinic where he was stabilized. The San Pedro Sun was also told that up to late this morning, Lopez's friend is yet to be found.

The Wife Of Slain San Pedrano Speaks

Last night we told about the murder in San Pedro where 36-year-old Rudolph Pitts was killed and 22-year-old Edgar Lopez was injured. Lopez escaped but Pitts's body was found yesterday in Northern Ambergris Caye. His decomposed body was brought to the city today for burial. We spoke to his wife who shared with us her shock at his untimely death.

Angela Pitts, wife of Rudolph Pitts
"He is a hardworking father of 7 kids."

Sahar Vasquez, reporter
"Was he the source of anybody targeting him? Was anyone threatening him before hand?"

Angela Pitts, wife of Rudolph Pitts
"I've never heard of anybody targeting him, never. I was with him on Saturday, Sunday and up to Monday when he left for work and he works up the coast and he stayed there and on weekends he come down and up to when he left his house on Monday he was a happy guy and he didn't seems to have any problem. He came to Belize City last Saturday to visit his kids to give them some money and this week he came and we were talking about the September celebrations and everything. When he left home Monday he was a happy guy. He didn't seem disturbed or anything, because whenever he has problems I would be the first person he would speak to good or bad or whatever. The police were great. They did a very good job helping me in every way."

Sahar Vasquez, reporter
"Have they found any leads yet or are they still looking?"

Angela Pitts, wife of Rudolph Pitts
"They picked up somebody already. I can't say anything more about it."

The incident occurred near a resort about ten miles away from San Pedro town. Pitts and Lopez worked together in construction. The Police have not officially released any names of possible suspects as yet.

This seems to be an ever increasing problem on the island. I wonder how it is affecting tourism or will affect it in the future. I don't know if I want to be out after dark! Very sad state of affairs.

The latest incident was absolutely tragic, but nothing that would have happened to you nor any tourist during day or night.
These people are being shot for a reason, not for sport and not as part of a petty theft gone wrong.

I'd like to see every playador sent off island, but we cannot legally do that.

If it keeps increasing like this it will. No tourists are shot in Belize City but how many tourists want to spend a day there or buy a house or condo there? Harvest Caye is there to keep tourists out of the city port.

NCL built Harvest caye to make money. Has nothing to do with safety, guest experience or grt services they offer. NCL has the caye to exploit their passengers as well as the people, flora/fauna and our resources in Belize. Then they will pick up and leave after they slaughter our last manatees. The US govt should investigate bribery paid by a company operating on US soil to agents of countries they exploit, especially Belize. It's a crime to do so!

As the shootings occur more and more often, property values will decrease, tourism will decrease and it will be harder to sell Ambergris Caye, Belize as a top notch tourist destination.
