What is the total population of Ambergris? Smaller than any small town in the US with more murders

OK Katie.Keep your head buried in the sand.

This is a growing problem and you know it.

I was in Belize last week and watched the news. Marleni had five murders start the newscast.

San Pedro has about 20,000 people. I think the murder rate there is much higher per capita than anywhere, USA. Belize City has how many people, 60,000 maybe?

I sell Belize to tourists. A lot. Just like you.

It gets harder every year.

Things are out of hand. It will only take one tourist shot accidentally by a gang banger or drug dealer. It could have happened the other day in the middle of the afternoon on Front street.

My hometown in NJ is 30K people has had one murder in the last 30 years and that was a gang drive by at a local diner. And they do not rely on tourists as a main source of income. Cannot compare NYC or Detroit to Ambergris

couldn't have said it any better, reaper. I had a bit of a dust up with one of these losers about a year or so ago. first tried to sell drugs to my bro-in law then me, next door to the recent shooting. when we told the dude to take a hike, he was all offended. the locals involved and around the incident seemed more interested with making excuses. luckily (for me and my group) no gun play that evening.

A while back you asked if it was safe to move to Belize and I said that you should read some earlier posts. Diane said not to listen to me as I was a trouble maker. What do you think now?

I'm Diane (as referenced above) and I still live here (after 25 years) and feel safe and love it and have no intention of leaving. I do what I can to make this island and the world a better place. I wouldn't have a clue where to run away to and find perfection - for sure no place I have lived before. Here is good - and real. I hate violence and don't participate in the stuff that creates it. I participate in the activities that fight crime - unfortunately because it has indeed invaded so much of life everywhere. The whole darn world is nuts in case you haven't noticed lately. "Bloom where you are planted" - for me that is here. Grateful every single day.

You are absolutely right. I have never talked to anyone who went to Belize City on a cruise who had a single good word for it. The usual reaction I get is, "you live in Belize" with a look of disbelief. I have to explain that I do not live in Belize City and that there are parts of the country that are very nice. The people whose only look at Belize is from a few hours in Belize City have a very poor impression of the country. If Harvest Caye gives them a better experience and Belize a better image, I'm all in favor of it.

Katie of course Harvest Caye was built to make money. Do you think it was built to lose money on purpose? There are not many ports in Central America compared to the ships plying their trade here. If there was better prospects they probably would never enter these waters at all. The idea is to satisfy their customers and keep them coming back not to tell others of their bad experiences and feelings of insecurity. Most of the expats I know all have a list of cab drivers who meet them at the airport or ferry and stay with them all day while they shop or what ever. This is to make sure of their safety and prevent them from wandering to areas of danger. Hell the locals I know of prominence always take security very seriously in the city. It is just a fact of life in Belize but especially Belize City.

Head in sand? I live here. In Belize City. I work with the judicial system, so perhaps, there's less sand in my eyes than the average person, yourself included. My posting regarded NCL sequestering their passengers on the caye, not crime.
