Belize Airport Authority confirms work on Caye Caulker Airstrip to start soon
The Belize Airport Authority (BAA) has confirmed to The San Pedro Sun that pre-construction work on the Caye Caulker Airstrip should be starting in the coming week. On Tuesday, September 12th, Tropic Air and Maya Island Air jointly informed the public that all flights to Caye Caulker would be suspended starting Sunday, October 1st, due to inadequate infrastructure. BAA quickly responded on the same day, claiming that funding was being allocated to conduct the necessary renovations to the airstrip. Recent rumors indicated that the loan application being filed by BAA had fallen through, and that work to rehabilitate the Caye Caulker airstrip was at a standstill. However, BAA’s Administrative Manager Orlando Magaña has dispelled those rumors, further clarifying the situation. “The loan for the renovation of the airstrip is being processed and will be discussed at our General Meeting in mid-October. By Friday, October 6th, work on the airstrip should commence in preparation of the big renovation,” said Magaña.

Belize Forest Department cracking down on Illegal logging
The Belize Forest Department is strengthening public awareness on the logging industry, following the confiscation of illegal Mahogany in the Orange Walk District. On Thursday, September 28th, the Forest Department fined 47-year-old Guinea Grass Village resident, Pablo Valladarez $22,828 for illegal possession of Mahogany. In the wake of this incident, and with the logging season opening on Sunday, October 15th, the Forest Department is launching an awareness campaign to inform the public that any person found engaging in illegal logging will be prosecuted. The Mahogany confiscated from Valladarez included 34 unstamped Mahogany logs, equivalent to 1268.8 board feet. Valladarez, along with Catalino Copo, Nelson Mosa, and Aurelio Mai were seen hauling illegally harvested Mahogany on Sunday, September 24th on the Old Northern Highway in the Orange Walk District. While all men were initially charged for “Unlawful Possession of Forest Produce” under the Forest Act of 2000 and its 2017 Amendment, Valladarez pled guilty to the full charges. As a result, Valladarez may face five years imprisonment if he is unable to pay the fine by January 31, 2018.

Due to their importance to the Belize’s tourism industry, authorities have taken several steps to protect these marine species. Most recently, the Belize Fisheries Department partnered with Florida International University (FIU) and the Belize High Seas Fisheries Unit to strengthen sharks and ray management and conservation initiatives in Belize. With support from the Central American Fisheries and Aquaculture Organization (OSPESCA), the Belize Fisheries Department hosted a National Shark Workshop from Thursday, October 5th to Friday, October 6th. During this workshop the National Shark Working Group (NSWG) presented the National Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks (NPOA – Sharks) in Belize.

Will cops catch Belize killer?

In front of his three young children, who one neighbour revealed, “they saw everything.” In late April, Toronto real estate speculator and part-time resident of Belize, Francesca Matus, 52, of Keswick, was strangled to death with her former U.S. Marine boyfriend. The crime-ravaged country’s keystone cops have gotten precisely nowhere with Matus’ slaying.

Coppola’s Hideaway Has a Big Solution to Costly AC
When visiting a far-flung island destination, guests might imagine the sounds of cool breezes and crashing waves—not a loud air conditioner. Also, it can be costly and simply not sustainable to run one on-property. Forgoing air-conditioning, The Family Coppola Hideaways—a collection of luxury resorts in Belize and Guatemala created by film director Francis Ford Coppola—upgraded all of its fans to Energy Star-efficient Haiku fans by Big Ass Solutions. The manufacturer of fans, lights and controls for industrial, agricultural, commercial and residential use, offers the Big Ass Fans, Big Ass Light and Haiku fan product lines. “Our hotel is a pioneer of sustainable practices. Our focus has always been minimal impact on our fragile environment,” said Bernie Matute, GM of the Blancaneaux Lodge, which is one of two Family Coppola Hideaway properties in Belize. “Although the creek that runs in front of the hotel harnesses our power, our focus was to use all energy-efficient appliances. Big Ass Solutions’ fans were a great fit. I suppose that both Big Ass Solutions and the Coppola Hideaways have a similar vision, improving the way of life without impacting our fragile environment.”
