Wolfe's Woofer: Bush Doctor
"There's our boy!" Sherry said, pointing at Konrad. Our ex and forever drummer, Konrad, sat at an outside restaurant table waiting for us to join him. Konrad goes to college in Orange Walk Town and whenever we're passing through we try to stop for a visit. "I'm having breakfast," I announced when we got seated and had some coffee. "It's too early for lunch. You guys have what you want." "Konrad, what kind of business is that?" Sherry asked, pointing to a small store across the street. "People are lined up to get in the door."

Doctor Love: Mean Mommy
Dear Doctor Love, I am a working mother of two young girls, so my children spend a lot of time at their grandmother's house. While I appreciate that she loves taking care of my kids, I have a problem with how she lets them behave. When I was growing up, my mother was very strict. With my children, she is overindulgent and pretty much a push over. They go to bed when they want to, they eat sugary snacks every day, and my six-year-old talks back and my mother lets her get away with it. When they are at home all I hear is, "Grandma this and grandma that," and when I remind them of my rules, I become the evil parent and there are tears and tantrums. Now she wants to get my daughter a tablet and I said no. How can I stop my mother from giving my kids everything they want? /s/ Mean Mommy

Dead Nurse shark
The public is reminded that nurse sharks are fully protected under Fisheries Law. It is an offense, it is illegal to kill a nurse shark in Belize. The animal in these pictures was found dead on the beach. This is sad since nurse sharks are one of the main attractions for tourist coming to San Pedro. It was clear that someone had cut the tail off, it was intentionally killed. Reports of persons seen killing or in possession of nurse shark can be made to the Fisheries Department 224-4552 or the Hol Chan office in San Pedro 226-2247.

Island Mystery: Sign Painting on the Caye
It's a riddlewrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. I've been noticing it for years but just recently, more examples are popping up. There is a mysterious style of sign in San Pedro, Belize. A swirled font - sometimes on a slant, sometimes creative liberties taken with traditional letter order. Highly stylized faces strangely reminiscent of the famous Easter Island statues. I love them all. So wildly mysterious. Is it one person painting these signs? I've written a few blogs about the Quirky Cute and Weird Signs of Belize (see below)- how did I miss this phenomenon! Let me show you some examples that I photographed earlier this week. I bet, with a quick walk through town or your neighborhood on Ambergris Caye, you can find lots of illustrations. Please send them to me.

Belize is the latest Central American country battling a 'pink eye' outbreak
The summer of 2017 appears to be "pink eye", or conjunctivitis season in the Americas with a number of countries in Central and South America and the Caribbean reporting increases of the eye infection. Now joining the Bahamas, Brazil, Costa Rica, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Saint Lucia, Saint Martin, Suriname, and the Turks and Caicos Islands is Belize where health officials report an increase in the number of reported conjunctivitis cases, particularly in the northern and central health regions.

Senators Nelson, Rubio file bill to extend Caribbean trade program
U.S. Sens. Bill Nelson (D-FL) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) filed legislation on Thursday, October 5 to extend a trade program designed to benefit several Caribbean nations, including Haiti, Jamaica, Barbados, Belize, Curacao, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and St. Lucia. The legislation, which is intended to strengthen economic ties and further U.S. interests in the region, extends the Caribbean Basin Trade Partnership Act (CBTPA), which was established in 2000 to allow certain Caribbean countries to export goods made with U.S. yarns, fabrics and threads into the U.S. duty-free. Under current law, CBPTA's preferential trade treatment for these Caribbean countries is set to expire on Sept. 30, 2020. The bill Nelson and Rubio filed today would extend the program through Sept. 30, 2030.
