Hey there! I'm an American that's thinking of renting a place for a year or so & could use all the input I can get! I'm only 39, so QRP isn't an option yet. Nothing keeping me in USA and might not want to come back... Any suggestions/opinions/input is greatly appreciated

Come on a vacation, explore the country and see where you want to stay. Then stay a while and kick back. You'll know the next steps as they unfold.

I am younger as well- 40 and not able to retire yet. I am a few months out from leaving the states..Minnesota BRRRRRR...I have an idea of where I want to be but the rental prices are nuts! I may be alone in this statement but I would much rather pay a true local, mom and pop, rent at a actually reasonable rate so they can make a little extra for themselves instead of paying out the nose to someone charging big $ that could give a darn about the locals etc. I would be happy to be able to find a little land with a view but I won't hold my breath or even a decent house with a fenced yard in a decent area, of course a pool would be fantastic but not expected. Im hoping to find something but time will tell. Either way I can not wait to get out of this frozen hell they call Minnesota.

Hello jk7740, long term rental units can be a challenge to find no matter what your budget or political views are. In addition anywhere in the world that offers a home on an island can be pricey regardless who owns it. There is certainly local housing offered by both Native Belizeans and Expats, there are also Beachfront homes offered by both Native Belizeans and Expats.... Many renters don't meet or know the owners of the property as they are managed by companies (often owned by both Belizean & Expats). Once you spend a little time here you will discover people here are like anywhere else; it is about the person you meet and not their culture/heritage/background. Therefore when you leave the cold behind in Minnesota, I humbly recommend you leave behind any preconceived judgements.

Long term rentals are defined as 6 months and over for locals and those who hold legal residency status in Belize. Short term rentals are defined as rentals under 6 months in duration and any rental provided to a non-legal Belize resident. Rentals to visitors (on visitor visa) attract the hotel tax. Visitor rentals are governed by the BTB and must meet BTB requirements and be registered - even Mom and Pop airbnb, couch surfing and home share providers.
