The library building of San Pedro Roman Catholic School (SPRCS) is in dire condition and in need of urgent refurbishing. It has been estimated that around $10,000 will be needed to make the necessary repairs. The school is hoping to raise funds with assistance from the community to start the work during the Christmas break.

Spearheading the initiative is librarian Catherine Whitney, known as “Teacher Kate.” With 47 years teaching experience, Whitney has been volunteering at the SPRCS library for approximately 18 years. According to Teacher Kate, the doors, windows, and stairs are broken and even the walls of the school library are falling apart. After the September 19th Mexico earthquake, the building itself was rocked and needed to be reinforced.

Teacher Kate has installed boxes, in the shape of books at banks across town, as well as at various resorts across Ambergris Caye where people can drop off their donations. All proceeds are going towards the reconstruction of the library. “I know this community is full of good people, so I believe that we will be able to raise the amount we need for our new library,” she said.

Community Rallies to Fund Repairs needed for the San Pedro R.C School Library

The San Pedro Roman Catholic School (SPRCS) accomplished their goal of raising $10,000 needed for the reconstruction of their library. The present state of the building is in deplorable condition and does not easily accommodate the students when using the library’s resources.

“I feel so happy that we completed the amount we needed for the reconstruction of our library. I can’t wait for the construction project to start,” said organizer of the fundraiser, librarian Catherine Whitney known as “Teacher Kate”. The construction phase for the renovated library is expected to begin on Saturday, December 16th, and is being spear-headed by Norman Eiley. Teacher Kate says she will be present during the entire process of construction, to assist in anything that is needed.

Funds were raised through community and donations abroad. Teacher Kate also installed collection boxes shaped as books at banks, resorts and local businesses across the island where residents and visitors could drop their kind contribution. She received a $5,000 check from an anonymously couple of Middle Island Neighborhood Watch, $500 from Ramon’s Village and Portofino, among other fundraiser done by Diane Campbell taking her to the goal of $10,000.

The construction project for the San Pedro R.C library begins

The construction of the new library at the San Pedro Roman Catholic School (SPRCS) begun shortly after the students were dismissed for their holidays. The new library is being constructed through funds that were raised via fundraisers and donations from sponsors abroad.

Teacher Kate started the initiative of raising funds approximately two months ago, as the past library building was in deplorable condition and could not comfortably accommodate the students when using its resources. The doors, windows, and stairs were broken and even the walls of the school library were falling apart. According to Teacher Kate, after the September 19th, 2017 Mexico earthquake, the building itself was rocked and needed to be reinforced. Teacher Kate installed collection boxes shaped as books at banks, resorts and local businesses across the island where residents and visitors could drop their kind contribution. Donations from abroad and contributions by several resorts of Ambergris Caye aided in the collection of $10,000 dollars that were needed for the construction of the new library.
