Any taxi driver can take you. If you are flying down, the fixed taxi rate is BZ$50 from the international to the city. Just tell them to bring you to the water taxi company that has the next boat leaving.

John Briceo calls Airport Project a "Hustle"

It appears the Caye Caulker Airstrip project will go ahead with Social Security Board funding, albeit reduced. The Belize Airports Authority is said to be receiving between three-point-five and four million dollars to re-do the runway with hot mix. The original seven-million dollar project, awarded by tendering to Imer Hernandez Development Company Limited, also called for a fence and other amenities. Either way, Opposition Leader John Briceo said it is what it is - U.D.P. favoritism and cronyism for which they must eventually answer.

John Briceo, P.U.P. Leader

"It just brings home the point that we have been making all along: that it is about a hustle, that the U.D.P. right now are trying to get all sorts of projects off the ground, that by handing over money to these political [operatives], and I want to challenge the Prime Minister if he thinks that Imer Hernandez is a U.D.P. or not, that these people are getting monies and we suspect and we believe that they are then going to be channeling some of these monies into the U.D.P. coffers. They think that with money they can buy the Belizean people once again; but I think that the Belizean people's eyes are open, that they are seeing these people for what they are - that they are a bunch of corrupt people and some of them have been taking acts that can be deemed as criminal against the Belizean people, so that no amount of money is going to save them from the wrath of the Belizean people."

Airport Progress:
They have done several test holes and placed survey markets all the way down both sides with measurements written on them. No activity since they finished the surveying a week ago. CCBTIA and National BTIA has both requested update and you can imagine no update. "No hurry, no worry".

Im not sure GOB think the airport is important or needed and would not be surprised if they delay repairs as long as possible. If they really intended to fix, it would have been done already for the season. And it ain't.

Caye Caulker Airstrip Coming When?

Earlier on in the news, we told you about the new international airport planned for northern Ambergris Caye in the Basil Jones area.

How about the repairs to the Caye Caulker airstrip which still needs a lot of work and attention?

Now in terms of cost, the initial $ 7 million dollars for renovations had to be downsized to $3.5 million for Social Security to consider the loan. Area Rep and the Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Manuel Heredia gave us an update today:

Hon. Manuel Heredia, Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation
"If I am not mistaken, the previous weeks they were taking the levels and what not - the technical part of it I am sure that yesterday the physical part of transporting materials to Caye Caulker started and it is our hope even though the contract calls for 8 months, we are hoping that by Easter we would be able to open the airstrip. This airstrip when completed is supposed to be hot mix airstrip juts like the municipal one with running lights on that and a little wider than what it is right now, but it supposed to be a state of the art airstrip. We are hoping at this point that Caye Caulker [airstrip] will be about 3.5 million dollars investment."

"It was 7 million dollars and you guys had to break it down to 3 right?"

Hon. Manuel Heredia
"It was 7 million and then we downsized it. Airlines were saying look we want our own terminal. We wanted to do our own terminal and lease it to them. They said it is better that they do it and then the fencing because there is a situation whereby there is no outlet for residents on the south part of that airstrip, then we have to wait a little longer to see how we can resolve that."

Reporter
"SSB has approved 3.5 million for the Caye Caulker airstrip."

Works should be completed by Easter next year.

SSB Didn't Approve A Loan For Caye Caulker Airstrip

The Social Security Board has not approved a loan for the urgent repair of the Caye Caulker Airstrip. Chairman Douglas Singh today confirmed that a loan for a little more than 3 million dollars was recommended by the Investment Committee, but was declined by the Board of Directors.

He says the board issued a carefully worded response suggesting that - if certain conditions are met - Belize Airports Authority could re-submit the application - for a third time.

The loan application started at 7 million dollars - which was rejected by the Investment Committee. The project has now been pared down to half that and the relevant Minister and Are Rep says he hopes work can finish by Easter.

The Minister had to know SS would not approve the loan, if I was told the same by SS a few weeks ago.
