Large enough for 767's and 787's? Seriously? Goldson International is large enough to accommodate planes that size and no carriers are using planes that size on their routes to Goldson. Why would carriers suddenly start using larger planes to take people to Ambergris Caye than they would use to take people to a more central location like Belize City? This sounds like an incredible waste of money.

And such an airport would also cause an incredible devaluation of properties that can hear the jet planes land.
Something tells me that this won't fly (pun intended).
Then again we could have an incredible skate-board park?

And this is why the budget for the Caye Caulker airport was slashed and it sits there half torn up and unusable.

This is one of the most illogical and economically unreasonable ideas, for too many reasons to list, that anyone could support unless they had the mentality of a rock or expected personal financial gain.
The last thing San Prdro needs is to become another Belize City, as the Hon Heredia suggests. Belize already has one "arm pit" in the country.

GOB signs Memorandum for International Airport on Ambergris Caye

The first step to the building of a full-service international airport on northern Ambergris Caye took place with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Tuesday, December 12th in the city of Belmopan. The MOU was signed between the Government of Belize and International Airport Alliance Belize Limited who seek to develop and manage the international airport to be called the Efrain Guerrero International Airport. The MOU is set for 12 months before any construction works begin on an ambitious project that is expected to cost over $100 million US dollars. During that time the team will be finalizing logistics in terms of land, finances and environmental assessments.

The proposed project plans to employ approximately 181 Belizeans during its operational phase. The magnitude of the airport, which will include a terminal building, runway, taxiway, apron and other ancillary facilities is expected to significantly increase tourist arrivals to Belize, particularly Ambergris Caye. The plan is to make it a state of the art facility that will not just accommodate private charters but commercial airlines such as United and American Airlines, including European carriers as well.

According to Jorge Jane, Director of International Airport Alliance, this project will bring long-term socio-economic benefits to Belize. "This project will be able to increase the opportunities for the residents of Ambergris Caye and San Pedro Town," said Jane. "It is going to be a driving force adding further value to its thriving tourism industry." The location of the airport will be at the Basil Jones, approximately 11 miles north of San Pedro Town.

After the signing of the MOU, Heredia expressed his satisfaction for such an important step in the country's aviation sector. "This airport means a lot to me because I always think about the future and seeing the way San Pedro has been developing year after year," said Heredia. "Being the number one tourism destination in the country I can foresee the next 10 years if this happens, it will develop so much that it will probably be the next city in Belize."

The MOU has established the general framework that will guide the standard investment facilitation process before works begin. If everything goes well, work at the airport is expected to begin early in 2019.

They do not have the land, the plan, the money or EA approval, so this means nothing, other than a UDP cronie being handed a contract for their war chest. A decision maker in UDP told me the air traffic for Caye Caulker does not justify spending on the airstrip and think the water taxi is all the caye needs. Besides that pesky agreement between GOB and current mgmt for Intl airport to be the only intl airport in Belize. So that will involve another law suit.

Katie, none of this makes sense to most of us..... What you say at least explains the media attention. In addition the local conversations continue to come back to; 'what we could with 100million USD for the infrastructure of the island'. (IMHO) If we have that much money to spend here would it not make sense to improve our infrastructure? Therefore improving the tourist experience from traffic issues to trash...... We have been fortunate enough to travel a good part of this globe and not once can remember being thankful the airport was a few miles closer to my destination. A guest mentioned the other night 'with that kind of money we could pave all the streets, put in proper water, sewage drainage and have money to build another Airstrip much like the one in town, then everybody wins'...... I kind of like that idea too.

Google the company and reps name. You won't find any comforting info.
