Wolfe’s Woofer: Eat Healthy
“Here, Mr. Dennis,” Mario said. “You get the tamale and Juan gets the tacos. I got panadas for me and the fried chicken and fries is for Mr. Tom.” Tom Vidrine was visiting so instead of taking the work crew out to the taco place for lunch I had sent Mario to pick up something for us. “Mr. Tom,that fried chicken, and fries ain’t healthy for you,” Juan said. “You need to be eating something like the rest of us is eating.”

Doctor Love: Excited Grandma and Tired
Dear Doctor Love, Our son and his teenage daughter are making their first trip to San Pedro for Christmas and we have planned numerous site-seeing tours and fishing trips. I still want to get my grand-daughter something for Christmas but I have no idea about what she would like or need. Giving money is easy but it seems so thoughtless. Do you have any suggestions? /s/ Excited Grandma

Is Belize less corrupt than a year ago?
Politicians and public workers in Belize engage in corruption. This is a fact. Is there anyone who would disagree? Perhaps the bottom-feeding political sycophants who depend on handouts to survive would, but generally speaking, this is accepted as common public knowledge. But on December 9, the world celebrated global Anti-Corruption Day and Belize celebrated its one-year anniversary since signing on to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), but in sincere honesty, is Belize less corrupt than it was a year ago?

NGO’s celebrate offshore oil moratorium

Belize/Guatemalas relation still a political football
Despite agreeing on two parliamentary motions in 2017, the Senate meeting this week proved that both the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the People’s United Party (PUP), still have not made any strides in workable cooperation for solving the territorial dispute with Guatemala.

Not a Slow Car, It's A Fast House: Belize, Week 1
We received an email telling us that the animal import permit was ready, so we packed up and headed for the border. As soon as we arrived a “border helper” met us and walked us through the steps. He also led the dogs, on their leashes, into the administration building and no one seemed to mind! The paperwork was fairly simple and the inspections were quick. We had arrived in Belize. Our first stop would be Corozal. We would buy groceries, get some Belizean currency and purchase a SIM card and data plan for our phone. This town had one camping area with electricity, so we settled in under a giant almond tree.

The Holiday Lighted Boat Parade Brings Even MORE Christmas to San Pedro
Last night, 9 or 10 boats lined up just north of town, switched on their generators and to the delight of the residents of San Pedro, puttered along the shoreline playing carols and throwing candy, shooting fire (!) and trying to stay in formation. It’s the cutest. One of my favorite FAVORITE ways to get ready for the holidays anywhere in the world. …Mama in her flip flops and I in my shorts had just settled down on a long dock north of town to watch… Okay….I’m reaching. But I need to jazz this post up a bit – my night-time, action, bright-lights-everywhere photography has taken a turn for the worse with this year’s event. I don’t know what happened! Here are my photos from last night.

Drug Company Under Fire After Revealing Dengue Vaccine May Harm Some
The first promising vaccine for dengue — a disease that afflicts hundreds of millions of people around the world — is in jeopardy after the Philippines suspended it, amid widespread fears about its safety and growing public anger over its use in 830,000 schoolchildren. The Philippines government has begun investigations into the rollout of the immunization program by the French drugmaker Sanofi, which has come under fire for discounting early warnings that its vaccine could put some people at heightened risk of a severe form of the disease. The newly revealed evidence, confirmed recently by Sanofi’s review of study data, found that in rare cases, Dengvaxia can backfire: If people who never had dengue are vaccinated and later become infected, the vaccine may provoke a much more severe form of the illness.
