They Killed The Cabbie Called "Elvis"
A 69 year old taxi-man was murdered in Belmopan over the weekend. Oswald Lopez also known as Elvis was found dead yesterday afternoon near the Baptist High School at the entrance of Belmopan. His killing has shaken the family and the Belmopan community as he was well known as a friendly and jovial person - not the type to have problems with anyone. Courtney Weatherburne was in Belmopan today to find out more. Hanging out at The Elvis Taxi Stand in Belmopan will never be the same again without Oswald Lopez also known as Elvis. The shed was named after him and today, his longtime friends found peace and joy in the fond memories they had of Lopez at their favorite spot.

Well Known Car Dealer Slain In Strange Attack
And from that killing in Belmopan, we turn now to the fatal stabbing of 53 Mark Anthony Vasquez in Belize City. It happened on Saturday night, around 11:00 - when the well known car dealer was attacked. Police were responding to reports of a fight near the Radisson Pier when they saw a young Hispanic man fleeing the area. He had blood on his shirt, and injuries of his own, and so the cops detained him. The officers found Vasquez on the ground in a pool of his blood; he had multiple stab wounds to the neck. He was rushed to the KHMH, but he was pronounced dead by when he got there. At today's police press briefing, the Head of CIB in Belize City shared what details they have been able to establish so far:

21 Year Old Robbed and Murdered In Independence Village
The weekend's third murder happened in Independence Village on Saturday night. The victim is 21 year old Victor Pou - who, was killed - apparently a group of men tried to rob him. It was a vicious end, as the young man was stabbed and chopped to death, robbed and then left for dead. Police were not alerted to the Boyd until six the following morning: ACP Joseph Myvette, NCIB: "On Sunday 17th December, sometime around 6am, police were called to an area in Independence Village in the area of the BTL tower where they observed the lifeless body of Victor Pou with multiple stab wounds. Initial investigation revealed that sometime around 10pm Pou was on his way to work when it is alleged that he was attacked by several persons." "Police have since detained 3 persons pending this investigation."

One City Council Sanitation Workers Viciously Chops Another While Co-Workers Look On
There was a crazy chopping incident on the work bus that Belize City Council employees use to move around as they perform their sanitation duties. That bus, which was parked at the corner of Cairo Street and Euphrates Avenue, was crowded with many eyewitnesses. But, that didn't stop 53 year-old sanitation worker Dennis Bodden from chopping his co-worker, 40 year-old Michael Tesecum, twice in the head. When we arrived, we found the employees hysterical and frightened by what had unfolded right before their eyes. In fact, a few of them didn't know how they were spared, since they were right there when Bodden started swinging the machete. We spoke to one co-worker who told us that he narrowly escaped being chopped in a dispute that he had nothing to do with:

Cops Catch "Keys Of Coke" Moving Through The City
Police still have not made any arrests for those five kilos of cocaine found hidden in a Lincoln Navigator up north last week. But, yesterday, what is being described as a "sophisticated operation" managed to track down kilos of cocaine on the move in Belize City. It happened yesterday afternoon when police pulled over 2 men in an SUV: ACP Edward Broaster, Commander - Operations: "Yesterday at about 2:30 p.m., we conducted an operation in Belize City where police intercepted one white 4Runner with license plate BC-C48344 and a search was conducted on the vehicle where five plus kilos of cocaine was discovered. One nine millimeter pistol, along with eleven rounds of ammunition. Two persons were arrested and they will be charged and taken to court today."

Five Years Later, Deon Bruce Still Fighting Extradition
For about 5 and a half years now, Belizean Deon Bruce has been at the Belize Central Prison awaiting his fate while he continues to fight his extradition to the United States. He is wanted in Chicago on grand jury charges of murder and attempted murder. US law enforcement has accused him of the July 2010 shooting of Americans Aaron Carter and Bryan Rodgers. So far, he has lost at the Magistrate's Court, after the former Chief Magistrate, Ann Marie Smith, ruled that he should be extradited. He also lost at the Supreme Court when Justice Courtney Abel refused to allow a judicial review of the Chief Magistrate's decision. At this moment, he has a pending appeal at the Court of Appeal that hasn't taken place as yet, and so today, his attorneys made another attempt at the Supreme Court level to get him freed, via a habeas corpus application.

OW Police Have/Had Jaime's Killer
Tonight Orange Walk police know who they plan to charge for the murder of 35 year old Jaime Pelayo. Matter of fact, he should have been charged today - but reports are that he escaped from police custody yesterday. Today, police wouldn't admit to that though, the head of national crimes investigation pretended like nothing happened when he said they know who their suspect is:.. ACP Joseph Myvette, Commander - NCIB: "In respect to the Orange Walk murder of James Pelayo, the police is looking for one suspect, who has been positively identified, and as soon as he is found he will be charged for murder."

Man On Motorbike Dies In Collision With Pickup
A Unitedville resident was killed in an accident on Saturday. 39 year old Leo Ampie Flores was heading to UNitedville on his motorcycle and he collided into a Wingle Truck that was traveling in the opposite direction. The accident happened at mile 50 in Camalote. Now the family just wants answers. Courtney Weatherburne has more. After finishing off from work at the Santander Sugar Factory, Leo Ampie comes here to help his common law wife run her Unitedville restaurant. It has been their routine for 5 years. But that routine has been broken forever. As captured in this amateur video, Ampie was killed in a head on collision. On Saturday evening after 4:00, Ampie was heading to his wife's spot on his Skygo motorcycle when San Ignacio Lab Technician, Winston Gordon was in his Wingle with his kids heading to Belmopan.

An Early Morning Traffic Fatality
And there was another fatal accident. This one happened on the Phillip Goldson Highway at mile 12 early on Saturday morning. The Commander of Operations told us more:... ACP Edward Broaster, Commander - Operations: "On Saturday, 16th December 2017, about 2:30 a.m., Ladyville Police responded to a Road Traffic Accident on the Phillip Goldson Highway between miles 12 and 13. Wave Of Terror Causes City Stampede As Parade-Goers Run Away From Bogus Reports of Shots Fired
Love FM's Christmas Parade in the City is a major event - especially for families. But on Saturday - terror was unleashed as word spread along the route that shots had been fired. That caused a wave of panic to ripple from the corner of Bishop and Albert streets, all the way down Cemetery road where throngs were lined up to see the parade. As word spread, folks just started to run, and It created a literal stampede where parents had to rush to pull their children out of the way - as adults were dashing for cover. But, all in vain, because no shots were fired. Police confirmed today that bottles were thrown between a group of young men:... ASP Alejandro Cowo, OC - CIB Belize City: "We can confirm that during the parade there was no shots fired. No where in the immediate [area] nor in the city at the time of the parade on that evening. Yes there was a dispute among two male persons which resulted in one of them receiving an injury and he was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released on the following day for a minor stab wound to the right shoulder. But there was no shots fired during the parade."

Developer's Spotty Background Raises Questions About 100 Million Dollar Airport Project
Last week we showed you the signing of a memorandum of understanding for the Efrain Guerrero International Airport - on northern Ambergris Caye. It's pitched as a hundred million US dollar project and the front-man is Miami native, Jorge Abraham Jaen who signed on behalf of International Airport Alliance Belize Limited. Well, a lot has emerged since then to undermine Jaen's credibility as a developer, and bring into question the legitimacy of the entire project - with some speculating whether it is another "dead raise" like Puerto Azul. It all started with Jaen's Facebook page which shows that he's a real estate developer with no background in airport development. And then that led to the unearthing of documents from the Miami-Dade county Office of the Inspector General - where he was accused of major fraud back in 2006. Add to that allegations of Conspiracy to Commit Extortion and voter fraud, and, by weekend, the social media wheels were rolling all over Mr. Jaen's name.

Judge: Keyron Didn't Kill Christopher
12 days ago, we told you about 26 year-old Keyron Johnson, who stood trial for the April 2012 murder of Christopher Jorgenson. Well, after his deliberations, Justice Adolph Lucas ruled that he is not guilty of the crime. As we told you, it happened at around 7:45 p.m. on April 15, 2016, and Jorgenson, who was shot in the lower abdomen, died 3 days later at the KHMH. The crown counsel's main witness was Jorgenson's sister, who said that she heard the gunshots, and when she looked out from her verandah, she saw her brother frantically running away from the nearby basketball court. She said that he was being pursued by a gunman she identified as Keyron Johnson.

Police On The Permeability of A Blasting Permit
Tonight, there still isn't any certainty on what permits were had, and which were needed for Tiger Aggregates to try and blow up a boulder in Cayo on Tuesday evening. Our information says that the Blaster's Permit issued by the Commissioner of Police has to be site-specific, but police maintain that it can be for any site:.. Jules Vasquez, reporter: "What is the proper protocol on blasters license and was it observed?" ACP Joseph Myvett, NCIB: "As far as we know, yes, the Commissioner does issue the blaster's license, but where the blasting is going to take place has nothing to do with the Police Department. And yes, the officer in command in San Ignacio was informed of the blasting, and hence police were on the scene at the time when the incident occurred."

The Boys Are Home After a Job Well Done In Dominica
The tiny island nation of Dominica was almost completely obliterated by Hurricane Maria. Months after the storm, though, the island is coming back together - with a lot of outside help. Many countries pitched in and Belize was one of them. 6 weeks ago we sent 35 soldiers from the Belize Defense Force to help with the re-construction effort. After doing a great deal of light engineering work they have returned with a lot to share from their productive mission. We spoke to two of the soldiers this afternoon. Captain Miguel Tuyub, Belize Defense Force: "We did refurbishing of two buildings at the Grammer School and we did some actual repairment at the museum. We fully refurbished the building at the Vacas. That is the Village Council Building. We did the Court House and The Police Station. We also did work at the Cathedral. The Catholic Cathedral. We did repairs there and then we did additional tasking when it came to RSS. Transporting things from one point to another."

A Dozen Days of Christmas, Then...
After 12 days of giving back to the community, the City Council's 12 days of Christmas has come to an end. They made sure to end the giving spree with a bang by bringing cheer to children of the KHMH pediatric ward. We caught up Counsellor Dion Leslie and his helpers at the event this morning. Dion Leslie, City Counsellor: "They decided to come to the pediatric ward to have some music, have gifts for all the children here, and you know to bring joy to them while they are in the hospital. Some may stay past Christmas some may come out before but we are still here to spread joy." "We have food. We have Mr. Lawrence who is a City Council employee as well playing music and singing. We are going to be mingling with them and talking to them and bringing that joy to them. Of course, we will have gifts at the end."

Small and Mighty Christmas Boat Parade
It is always a crap shoot taking night shots of decorated boats, in the annual San Pedro Holiday Boat Parade. As I edit what I got with my great zoom on my Nikon Coolpix B500, I am pleased with what I managed to catch. Unfortunately, not all boats got a good picture. I would, however, like to congratulate everyone that entered - all of you did a great job. Thank you for the creative effort in decorating your boats so well and to the event organizers and sponsors for all your work to keep the annual San Pedro Boat Parade Christmas tradition alive. This year I was back to watching the parade from a dock. I got to the Palapa Bar when the parade had just started so I moved fast to start snapping pics. After the boats were out of sight, I sat on the dock steps peacefully watching tarpon and eagle rays in the water. Eventually, my friends, Rosemary and Emily turned up. We managed to score some Landshark Adirondacks and enjoyed drinks and chatting while waiting for the parade to pass by again on its way to the finish line near the afterparty location.

Gorgeous Artwork by Pen Cayetano & A Lavish Opening Party for Diamond Lodge
But one of my favorites in the entire country is Pen Cayetano. His gallery is in Dangriga in Southern Belize - he is a talented musician, the creator of Punta Rock music, he and his wife own a beautiful gallery and his paintings, based on local cultures - especially the Garifuna culture - knock my socks off. I was invited to a RARE show, perhaps his first ever, in San Pedro. I've been dreaming of one piece in particular since that night. It was the opening of a new resort - Diamond Lodge. A lavishly appointed new B&B just south of town - a building that has been around for years but has gone thru many many transformations. Many have wonderedwhat is behind that HUGE wall?

2017 Christmas Parade was held in Corozal
It was the Annual Christmas Parade that was held in Corozal Central Park on Sunday December 17, 2017. Everyone lined up at Central Park to witness the Christmas Parade. It commenced at 6pm but, there was a delay and it began at 6:30pm. This was made to organize the different groups by names. As I heard the sirrens from the distance I saw the kids and the Adults got excited. I heard the bitting of the drums from the distances and I was happy once again to be part of this event. I couldn't count a number of floats that came out to celebrate the Christmas Tradition Parade in Corozal. Excitingly, I took as many pictures as I can. I saw the the different colorful floats when they past infront of me. It became more fun when I showed it live on my page. In one float I saw children very excited when Mayor Pablo Marin was giving free toys.

In the footsteps of Jacques Cousteau: Researchers unveil the secret of the Blue Hole stalactite
In 1970, Jacques Cousteau and his team recovered an unusual stalactite from the depths of the Caribbean Sea. Now a geoscientist explains what it reveals about our climate since the last ice age. In 1970, a team led by French ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau recovered an unusual stalactite from the depths of the famous Blue Hole in the Caribbean Sea. In the current issue of the Journal of Sedimentary Research, geoscientist Eberhard Gischler of Goethe University Frankfurt explains what it reveals about our climate since the last ice age. At the time, Jacques Cousteau's divers did not find any visible traces of living organisms in the mysterious Blue Hole. They did, however, find a large number of stalactites such as are known from karst caves. These are formed through the dissolution of limestone. Today the 125-metre-deep Blue Hole off the coast of Belize is flooded by the sea.
