Normally whenever I hear a black/doom metal album I don’t expect much because a lot of times it’s not properly done and it’s just on big mess of an album. But Hanal Pixan’s new “In Lu’umil Belice” that is quite the opposite. While this album is far from a masterpiece (in my eyes, that is), it is definitely something that Hanal Pixan should be proud of because they managed to create an album that greatly suits their genres in ways that it’s shown off wondrously in the form and make up of the album. Each song is its own unique experience that while I have to say I didn’t love, they were certainly something different to say in the least. “In Lu’umil Belice” isn’t something that’d make you shit your pants in amazement, but it definitely is something worthy of checking out if you’re looking for some spice in your music.

Hanal Pixan/U k'aayo' ob K'ujo'b/2017 Full Length Review

Hanal Pixan are a band from Belize that has been featured before in this zine and goes for more of a mixture of raw black metal and Mayan folk music on this recording and this is a review of their self released 2017 album "U k'aayo' ob K'ujo'b".

Clean yet distorted playing starts off the album along with some folk instruments before going into a heavier direction which also introduces grim black metal screams onto the recording and when the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs a raw feeling.

All of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them while the riffs also use a decent amount of melody and the songs bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and when solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very melodic fashion and there is also a brief use of rain and thunder sounds.

The slower sections of the songs add in a touch of doom metal along with influences of death metal being added into some parts of the songs and there is also a small amount of atmospheric synths as the album progresses and they close the album with a track that is very long and epic in length which also introduces clean guitars onto the recording which also gives the music more of a progressive feeling while also being all instrumental.

On this recording Hanal Pixan brings in more of a raw black metal style while also mixing in more Mayan folk music this time around and only keeping around a touch of doom metal, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in Yucatec Mayan and cover the history, mythology, and heritage f their home land..

In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Hanal Pixan and if you are a fan of raw black metal with folk elements, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Aj Muuk Kimen" "Maasewal" and "K'aay Uti'al Pixan". 8 out of 10.

RHYS STEVENSON Review on Hanal Pixan album U K'aayo'ob K'uyo'ob : http://globalmetalapocalypse.weebly...-haven-at-rest-dreaming-dead-hanal-pixan

'U k'aayo'ob K'ujo'ob'

Whenever a band sings about their culture or sings in their own native language or an indigenous language, there is a sense of uniqueness surrounding the band's music output. Belizean Black / Doom Metallers Hanal Pixan are no exception, they sing in the local Yucatec Maya language of which descends from the Ancient Maya civilization and is spoken in the Yucatan Peninsula and Belize. The trio's debut album 'U k'aayo'ob K'ujo'ob' sounds like a tribal ritual of the bestial nature, and the language sits well with the extremity of Black Metal, there's no beleaguering shrieking vocals nor any desire to play as fast as possible. In fact it could be said that Hanal Pixan are leading the Belizean Metal scene to newer heights with their pioneering sound of Mayan Metal.
