As Drug Running Vehicle Makes Dramatic U Turn At Mex. Border

A very crazy scene played out at the northern border this afternoon - when a drug running SUV with Belize City plates - raced back into Belize after he felt the Mexicans were going to catch him with the drugs.

At around 2:30 - the Navigator was approaching Mexican customs who did an X-Ray scan. The Mexicans saw something unusual in the cab of the vehicle and selected it for a secondary search. When the driver heard that, he did a high speed about turn. He sped out of the Mexican customs area and raced back over to the Belize side. The Mexican customs police pursued - and it seems in the rush, the Navigator's rear tyre was damaged. That caused him to crash into the gate of the cargo section on the Belize side. From there the driver dashed out on foot, and escaped either into the bushes or through the customs compound.

Acting on information received from their Mexican counterparts - who had the scan of the area where they believed the drugs were concealed - Customs went ahead and searched the vehicle. They found 6 kilos of a white powder believed to be cocaine hidden under the dashboard. According to our information, it was in a concealed compartment controlled by hydraulics.

Customs handed the cocaine over to police, and the Mexicans handed over the license which the driver presented. Our information says the driver is from Ranchito village - linked to known drug operators in that northern village.

As for the vehicle, it is registered to a Belize City resident- who is believed to have underworld connections.

The vehicle is now at the Corozal police station - while suspects are being sought. We'll keep following this story very closely.

Man Hunt For Suspected Cocaine Smuggler

Police are looking for the Lincoln Navigator driver who crashed into a gate at the Belize customs area yesterday afternoon. As we told you, the driver sped out of the Mexican customs area because the x-ray showed something unusual in the cab of the vehicle. As soon as the Mexicans told the driver that his vehicle was selected for a secondary search, he raced over to the Belize side. The driver bolted into the nearby bushes after he crashed into the gate. Now, the something 'unusual' in the vehicle was cocaine - 13 pounds of it. Today police didn't have much details relating to this case but they told us they are searching for the runaway driver.

ACP Joseph Myvette, NCIB
"On yesterday's date sometime shortly after 2pm Corozal police was called to the northern border. The cargo section of the Customs Department where a Lincoln Navigator with Belize City registration plates was seen crashed into the fence. Police observed customs official there who gave them certain information and as a result a search was conducted on the vehicle which resulted in the discovery of 6 parcels of suspected cocaine with a total combined weight of 6,238 grams."

"Police have since impounded the vehicle and took possession of the drugs. This matter is continuing to be investigated by the police department."

Reporter
"Can you speak of the occupants?"

ACP Joseph Myvette, NCIB
"At the time the police arrive there, there was no occupants in the vehicle."

Reporter
"Do you have any information from Mexican counterparts in terms of the name, copy of driver's license that you guys found?"

ACP Joseph Myvette, NCIB
"Not that I know of, but I know that one person is being sought for questioning for this discovery."

Reporter
"Is it within the purview of the department then to be able to trace the ownership of this particular vehicle based on the license plate and the traffic information?"

ACP Joseph Myvette, NCIB
"Yes we are in the process of doing that."

Reporter
"The drugs were hidden in a conceal compartment. Do you guys have any information in terms of what this says about the operation is it was a sophisticated operation of this individual?"

ACP Joseph Myvette, NCIB
"No, not that we know of."

As you heard the police could not confirm if the driver is linked to drug operators in the Northern village - although our sources say so. Our information is that the driver is from Ranchito village. As we told you, police found the 6 kilos of cocaine hidden under the dashboard. According to our information, it was in a concealed compartment controlled by hydraulics.

Investigation Into Lincoln Navigator Not Done

One man has been charged in the case of the cocaine carrying Lincoln Navigator - but that's not the end of the story. 41 year old Ranchito resident Robert Gentle, has been remanded into custody for driving the Lincoln Navigator which had 13 pounds of cocaine in a hidden compartment.

But, how did he get possession of the vehicle? And what about the owner, who reported it stolen minutes after the crash?

Police say the owner and the driver still have more questions to answer:..

ASP Alejandro Cowo, OC-CIB Belize City
"Yes the police is looking at that angle and likewise other persons are being seek in reference that same vehicle."

Reporter
"Ok, but so since the vehicle was not his, did Mr. Gentle have any conveyance or any authorization because the vehicle has been reported stolen. So why was he not then charged with theft of the vehicle or handling stolen goods or abetment to theft or something related to the...?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"It's a matter of the police is still investigating at this moment."

Reporter
"So he may face additional charges."

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"Yes he may."

Robert Gentle was detained on New Year's Eve and he was represented in court by attorney Leslie Hamilton.
