Wolfe’s Woofer: The Collar
“Time for you to take your shower and get ready,” Sherry said.
“Ready? Ready for what?”
“We’re having dinner at Denise and John’s house. Remember?”
“Oh, no,” I said. “I forgot all about it. Melody called while you were gone this morning and roped me into taking care of Davin this evening.”
It was too late to get out of that commitment because there was a knock on the door and Melody came in like a whirlwind.
“Thank you so much,” she said, giving me a hug. “You’re the best grandpa ever.”
“You only say that when you want me to babysit.”
Health Corner: Periodontal (Gum) Disease
If you have been told you have periodontal (gum) disease, you’re not alone. Periodontal diseases range from simple gum inflammation to serious disease that results in major damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. In the worst cases, teeth are lost.
Whether your gum disease is stopped, slowed, or gets worse depends a great deal on how well you care for your teeth and gums every day, from this point forward.
What causes gum disease?
Our mouths are full of bacteria. These bacteria, along with mucus and other particles, constantly form a sticky, colorless “plaque” on teeth. Brushing and flossing help get rid of plaque. Plaque that is not removed can harden and form “tartar” that brushing doesn’t clean. Only a professional cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist can remove tartar.
Doctor Love: Wife
Dear Doctor Love,
My husband has gotten fat. Not chunky or big. He is really fat. He drives taxi and snacks all day on cokes, chips and chocolate, so stopping him is hard. If I mention it, he promises to make a change, but the only change is the size of his belt. It is hard to have physical relations with him because he is heavy and gets out of breath. He is young, only thirty-two, and he has trouble climbing stairs or doing work around the house and when he pulls his shirt up over his belly it looks really horrible. His brothers are all big and they have health problems that I don’t want my husband to have. I love him very much but his size is making him unattractive to me. How do I make him stop gaining weight?

Welcome to San Ignacio, Belize
San Ignacio is the heart and soul of the Cayo District, a vibrant traveler center from where all roads and activities fan out. Together with twin-town Santa Elena, on the east bank of the Macal River, this is the main population center of Cayo, with lots of good budget accommodation, decent restaurants and frequent transport.
But San Ignacio is no inland San Pedro, existing only for tourism. It has a very positive and infectious local vibe, with a bustling market and a steady influx of immigrants. Residents are mestizos, Maya and Garifuna, as well as a bunch of free-spirited expats from Europe and North America. San Ignacio is on the west bank of the Macal River, a couple of miles upstream from its confluence with the Mopan River – a meeting of waters that gives birth to the Belize River.
As Trump opens more waters for oil exploration, the tiny nation of Belize shows a better way
On Thursday (Jan. 4), Donald Trump proposed allowing oil drilling in nearly all waters situated off of US shores. If the proposal passes, it will open up more than one billion square kilometers (about 390 million square miles) of area previously protected for environmental reasons.
The oil industry cheered the announcement, calling it “long overdue,” while environmental groups called it a “shameful giveaway” to the oil industry, as The New York Times summarized.
Among the hullabaloo, one piece of good news didn’t get the attention it deserves. On Dec. 29, the Belize government voted to implement an indefinite moratorium on all new oil exploration in its waters.
Belize: Big Iguanas & Rising Rivers
Down near the Southern border of Belize lies Punta Gorda, an interesting little town. It has a very Caribbean vibe. But many people speak Spanish, as it shares a jungle border with Guatemala. In PG (as the locals call it) this strange house towers over all the others with its multi-story growth.
And we found this cute little shop selling coffins. They look so good, U wish U were DEAD.
Driving North across Belize took us back up the Hummingbird Highway. This is a fun drive, as there are well-spaced tourist stops along the route.
We stopped at a small-scale cassava bread making shop. This is located in the midst of some sugar cane fields, one mile down a bumpy dirt road. The production takes place in an open-air barn using a blazing hot fire to bake the thin sheets. Cassava bread is similar to an unleavened cracker made from the finely ground flour of the cassava or yuca root. Here is a photo of the mother and daughter team that run the place. On baking or grinding days they have other family members assisting.
