The ferry in the village of San Estevan, Orange Walk, which links it with Progresso in Corozal and points north, has been closed from December twenty-ninth. At the time, the Ministry of Works indicated that urgent maintenance needed to be done on the ferry. The closure was slated to last through to this Wednesday. But the ministry released a statement this evening indicating that motorists will face a longer wait to use the transportation route. The ferry remains closed until January twenty-second, less than two weeks from today, to facilitate the completion of the repairs. The ministry says it regrets inconveniences caused.

San Estevan Ferry Needs Another Week to Re-Open

Residents of the north, particularly the villages of San Estevan, Chunox, Copper Bank and Progresso, can expect further delays as the ferries connecting the villages are still down for repair. The San Estevan Ferry which connects to cane fields in the villages of Caledonia, Buena Vista and surrounds has been down since December but according to Minister of Works Rene Montero, it should be back up in another week. But the ultimate goal, he added, is to replace the outdated transportation system with a modern bridge.

Rene Montero, Minister of Works

"It is underway and probably within the next two weeks or so it will be open. If you want more details you have Mr. Medina who is the project engineer there, but as [far] as I am concerned those [ferries] are being upgraded and pretty soon they will be functional. In fact, we have been seeking funds to replace those two ferries, to put bridges across, so as to avoid the inconvenience that those ferries are causing right now."

The Laguna Seca Ferry which connects Chunox with Copper Bank in Corozal will be down until the middle of February.
