Caye Caulker residents concerned on the delay of works at the island’s airstrip
The management at the Belize Airport Authority overseeing the rehabilitation of the airport’s runway informed The San Pedro Sun that the project is ongoing and that they expect to complete the works by mid-June of this year. A visit to the closed airstrip revealed that no construction work has been done on the airstrip and its surroundings. A series of deep holes were observed on the surface of the runway, while on its east end, piles of building material had been unloaded. According to the General Manager of BAA, Nicholas Ruiz, the process for the airport’s refurbishment is an ongoing one and that even though people might think that nothing is happening, work is actually being done. “Most of the building material is being barged to the island from the mainland,” said Ruiz. “There is a process and work is taking place.” Ruiz indicated that he and his team will do a site inspection to find out more about the progress of the project.
Third Annual Land Rover Car Show Held
The third annual Land Rover Car Show was held on Sunday, February 25th at Cheers Restaurant and Cabañas located at mile 31 on the George Price Highway. Rover enthusiasts attended the event eager to view the legendary vehicles as the show featured everything from the oldest to the most recent model. At the end of the exhibit, trophies were given to the oldest Rolling Rover, including the most popular vehicles selected by the attendees.
Organizers Matt Brislawn and Sharon Svec started what has become a tradition in April 2016 with the first-ever show held in Orange Walk Town. At this year’s event, a total of eight Rovers starred with a 1979 model which attracted a lot of attention from viewers. Among the different vehicles, there was a Land Rover Defender equipped with a tent, ideal for camping expeditions. Another Rover that caught the attention of the crowd was a red 130 Model Defender, along with a 110 Defender. The most recent model present at the show was a 2007 LR 3. Fanatics not only had the chance to view inside the vehicle but also admired the original engine, which is a trademark of the brand.

Protests were staged all over the country last night including Belize city, Orange Walk and Roaring creek following the arrest of the man accused of an unthinkable crime against his step-daughter.
In Belize city, protesters gathered in front of the Queen street police station to condemn the rape of a 17-month-old baby girl. Late on Friday, police charged the stepfather with ‘dangerous harm’.

Mexican government provides 25 scholarships
The Mexican Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Belize’s Ministry of Education (MOE) yesterday to facilitate the distribution of 25 half-scholarships for low income students attending evening classes at the Escuela Technica Secundaria Mexico in Corozal.
The agreement was signed under the Mexican Agency for International Cooperation and Development
(AMEXCID), by their Executive Director, Agustin Garcia Lopez and CEO of the MOE, Deborah Domingo, at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex.
In his address to the gathering of scholarship recipients and other invited guests, Lopez explained that for over 21 years the government of Mexico has continued to strengthen educational opportunities for children through Latin America by means of its well known scholarship program of which Belize has been a part of since 1996. The program has experienced remarkable success and has expanded into 147 schools across 17 regions.
Week in Review: Luxe Pool Time, A New Bar off the Beaten Path, a Nude Crab & More
I live 7 miles north – less town and more the great wilds of Ambergris Caye. Since the road is SO rocky and gutted right now, the slow ride provides me time to see the scenery. The wild flowers and this guy a few months ago.
I stopped by the newest bar on the island. Or at least one of them. Garifuna Legegu Grill in San Mateo. It is near the entrance to San Mateo just north of the bridge.
I found out a few months ago that the property is owned by Walter Medina! Almost EVERYONE knows Walter. The breeze at the top of the bar is pretty great. It wasn’t open yet when I arrived but I took a quick look around anyway.
For a bit more information, check out the Facebook page. I just did and found this newer picture AND the fact that you can arrive by boat. How cool.

This is Belize: When good golf carts go bad
We were nearly at the crest of the Sir Barry Bowen Bridge this morning when something started going awfully wrong with Moncho 59.
More exactly, the golf cart started going left and right.
On its own.
The steering wheel seemed to suddenly lose all interest in doing its job. Which is a simple one: Keep the front tires going in the right direction.
I eased Monch 59 down the bridge toward San Pedro Town, looking a bit like a tourist after that first stop at the Palapa Bar.
Pulling over at the base of the bridge, a quick inspection showed everything seemed to be in order. The tires were pointed in the right direction. They were adequately inflated. Nothing was dragging on the ground beneath the engine.
Still, the best the old girl could do was wobble past the toll booth and the adjacent hardware store. A tiny piece of real estate between Boca del Rio Hardware and Erica’s produce stand became a safe haven from the traffic.
Conservation efforts aid jaguars: agency
Conservation measures to protect the jaguar have led to a slight increase in the animal’s numbers, the head of a federal agency said this week.
Natural Protected Areas Commission chief Alejandro del Mazo Maza also announced the creation of a new tri-national protected area in partnership with Guatemala and Belize.
The commissioner told the newspaper El Universal that jaguar conservation policies enacted by the Mexican government have been successful, citing a 10% increase in the Yucatán peninsula region alone, where the population is estimated to have grown from 1,850 to 2,000.
