As part of the National Emergency Management Organization’s work to ensure tsunami preparedness the organization has made an investment in sirens which have been installed in communities along Belize’s coastal areas including the Cayes. Central Regional Coordinator for NEMO Al Westby told us more about the systems.
Al Westby, Regional Coordinator, NEMO:
“What we have invested in through a recommendation of our national coordinator at this point I’m positive that here is a new siren system that was equipped in San Pedro to alert the residents of that area, two systems actually one in Caye Caulker; also in Dangriga, Punta Gorda, Placencia and in Corozal so there will be a different sound from the regular siren as was mentioned before because people thought at one point that there should be a different sound from the fire service so we invested heavily in that and that is part of our work and we hope that it can work and have the people conscious of what is happening around their surroundings and they need to put in their own work work to- pay attention and help us make this thing easy.”Westby says the organization also continues to conduct public awareness on tsunami preparedness.
