Some species of bats can live up to 40 years. Bats use their extreme sense of hearing. Bats are important for agriculture because they control insect pest population.

Bats also tell us about the health of the environment because they are sensitive to changes in their surroundings.

A 2015 survey within the Maya Golden Landscape identified 51 bat species, visiting bat researchers along with our team used acoustic and mist netting methods for this study. The most species-rich site was Bladen Nature Reserve with 29 species recorded.
