Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic celebrates medical laboratory week
The Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II hosted a health fair on Friday, April 27th in commemoration of the annual ‘Medical Laboratory Professional Week.’ Held under the theme ‘One Lab, One Team, Making a Difference,’ the event saw 40 participants who learned a bit more about the laboratory services at the Polyclinic. They also had access to free medical check-ups for blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides testing and even finding out their weight and height. Under a tent outside the Polyclinic, laboratory staff welcomed patients from 8AM to 12 mid-day, where they provided valuable information on how to maintain a healthy life. According to them, everyone who attended benefited from good quality service and learned more about the different tests that are done at the island’s main medical center. Apart from participating in the fair, each attendee was given bottles of water and salads in an effort to promote a healthy lifestyle.

See and Taste Belize, Inc. donates $160,000.00 for the children at the Inspiration Center of Belize
On Monday, April 30th, 2018 at 10:00 am, there was a formal handing over of the funds raised by See and Taste Belize Inc. along with its partners, BELTRAIDE, BTB and NICH at the Inspiration Center, represented by Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow, Special Envoy for Women and Children and foundress of the Inspiration Center. See & Taste Belize Inc. doubled its donation after only the second year due to the joint efforts of its partners, sponsors from Belize and abroad who increased in numbers and support as well as the Belizean Diaspora who came in droves to attend. The Hon. Consul General of Belize in Florida, and foundress of See and Taste Belize Inc., Janine Sylvestre handed over a check in the amount of $160,000 raised from the festival held in Miami, Florida last October

New garbage collection regulations implemented by SPTC
A new garbage collection regulation mandated by The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) has many island residents unhappy. Effective Friday, May 4th, all garbage containers must be placed inside the yards of residential and commercial areas. This new regulation also demands that all garbage bins must be easily accessible by its sanitation personnel for disposal, and warns that failure to follow this new rule will result in the removal of their garbage containers from the street. The announcement was made on Thursday, April 26th and despite the immediate opposition by residents, the new regulation will go into effect as is. Residents are frustrated that the public was not consulted prior to this new policy or that a trial period was imposed. “This will be complicated. The Town Council should reach out to residents before implementing these rules,” said one concerned resident, “this will cause more problems than solutions.” Many homeowners claim that the garbage collectors are careless once garbage has been tossed in the collection truck, and they simply leave the garbage bins lying around.

Man found guilty of attempted murder of his cousin
He was accused of the 2012 attempted murder of his cousin, Taisha Staine. However, yesterday in court, Kevaughan Staine was found guilty before Justice Collin Williams. He will be sentenced on September 5, 2018.

Uno gas station robber released on bail
We had previously reported that Marvin Phillips, 19, was one of two men remanded to prison after they were charged with the armed robbery at the UNO gas station in San Ignacio. However, in the Supreme Court on Friday he was granted bail of $5,000 by Justice Francis Cumberbatch. He is to return to court on June 28.

Belizeans jailed in El Salvador for money laundering
International media outlets are reporting that three Belizeans have been jailed in El Salvador. They are Marlon Alberto Valle, Jessy Gabriel Ojeda and Deymy Vanessa Rodríguez. Reports are that they were along with three Hondurans and a Guatemalan who were all busted with over $10,000 each at the that Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero Airport.

Robbery caught on camera but robbers steal security camera too
It never made the news but on Thursday afternoon a Chinese store was robbed in Corozal town. Sometime after 3 o’clock while the sun was still shining, three men entered Chang Fa Restaurant and Bar on Park Street North.

Escaped prisoners captured and jailed again
Austin Sutherland, Marvin Pech and John Matus escaped from cell block #3 at the Corozal police station on April 11. They had reportedly cut through the bars of their cell to gain their freedom. On Wednesday Sutherland and Pech were scene at the cemetery in Orange Walk. A source called the police who quickly made their way to the area and captured the men.

4 Belizeans and 1 Guatemalan busted with weed in Cayo
Yesterday morning San Ignacio police were on a mobile patrol when they intercepted a Toyota pickup. When police searched the vehicle, they found 3 knapsacks containing a total of 30 pounds of weed.

Ramon’s Village & Estel’s Dine by the Sea & Jimmy Buffett
Yesterday we met up with friends at favorite breakfast spot, Estel’s Dine by the Sea. Feet in the sand, oldies on the radio, we all ordered one of my favorite foods – the Belizean Fry Jack. I knew Estel’s had been around for a while…but I asked our waiter what year the diner on the beach opened. January 1, 1992. And while 25 years ago might be considered modern history in most of the world, San Pedro really was a tiny village just a few decades back. San Pedro High School was founded in 1971, our first tourist hotel in the country, the Holiday Hotel, is just over 50 years old. Tropic Air started in 1979 with just one plane.

Corozal Rotaract is renovating Mother's Park
A number of volunteers from Corozal Rotaract club came out to renovate Mothers Park right here in Corozal Today Saturday. The Corozal Rotaract are planning to paint the entire park which will be done on Mother's Day. Today, I spoke to the President of the group and explained more: " Corozal Rotaract club comes out to volunteer doing work around Corozal. We depend on the items being donated or fundraised to get our equimpents being done. Our volunteer works are many from our group members and don't depend on anyone to change our communnity positively. We do our job and we promote a voluntary change for Corozal. If everyone wants to join Corozal Rotaract contact our Corozal Rotaract page. You must be between the ages 18 - 30. Also, we will be having a Ceremony on May 10, 2018 at 5pm right here at Mother's Park.
