Belize Weather Forecast: May 8, 2018

General Situation:
Ambergris Caye: Conditions this morning by Elbert just before or after this post!
Belize NMS: Generally fair weather prevails.
Advisories: None.
24-hour forecast: Cloudy spells with a few showers mainly over southern and inland areas. Elsewhere, showers will be isolated.
Winds: North-Northeast | 5-10 kts
Sea Surface Temperature (°f): 82
General Outlook: (Wed. and Wed. night) variably cloudy with isolated showers, mostly over the south.
Daily Tropical Weather Outlook: A sharp elongated trough reaches from central Cuba to the southwest Caribbean near 15N80W. Riding over the central Atlantic is supporting moderate to fresh E to SE winds across the basin east of the trough axis. Buoy observations and altimeter satellite data show 5 to 7 ft west of the trough. Generally gentle to light northerly winds are noted across the Caribbean. Moderate to fresh trade winds are noted across the tropical north Atlantic waters west of 55W, south of the main ridge. Seas are reaching 8 ft, but this includes a component of decaying NE to E swell. Regional radar mosaics indicate a few warm topped showers south of the central Cuba near the trough, supported by a broad mid/upper level trough south of the Caymans. A few fast moving trade wind showers are observed moving off the Atlantic into the Leeward and Windward Islands. Otherwise, no significant weather is noted.

The trough is expected to drift westward and weaken through mid week, but will remain the focus for showers and a few thunderstorms through late Tue as the supporting mid/upper trough lifts northeast and dampens out. Trade wind flow will increase over the south central Caribbean by Fri night as ridging builds north of the region. Little change otherwise in the forecast. Click for more...

Marine Conditions:
  Winds Seas Waves Details
Today N-NE 5-10 kts Light Chop 1-3 ft A FEW SHOWERS.
Tonight NE 5-10 kts Light Chop 1-3 ft ISOLATED SHOWERS.
Tomorrow NE-E 5-10 kts Light Chop 1-3 ft ISOLATED SHOWERS, ESPECIALLY OVER THE SOUTH.
Outlook E 5-10 kts Light Chop 1-3 ft ISOLATED SHOWERS.

The Caribbean Sea

An upper level cyclonic circulation center is along the Atlantic Ocean side of Cuba along 78W. Upper level cyclonic wind flow that is moving around the circulation center covers the area from SW corner of the Caribbean Sea to 28N in the Atlantic Ocean between 65W in the Atlantic Ocean and 90W in the Gulf of Mexico. A surface trough is along 74W/76W, across SE Cuba and the Bahamas, from 18N in the Windward Passage to 28N in the Atlantic Ocean. Precipitation: widely scattered moderate to isolated strong rainshoewrs cover the areas from 15N in the Caribbean Sea to 27N in the Atlantic Ocean between 70W and 78W. Rainshowers are possible elsewhere from 14N in the Caribbean Sea to 32N in the Atlantic Ocean between 60W in the Atlantic Ocean and 86W in the NW corner of the Caribbean Sea, including in parts of Florida. This feature was forecast by the computer models at the beginning of the week. The GFS model forecast, for 250 mb and 500 mb, shows that a cyclonic circulation center will stay on top of Cuba, weaken into a trough, and then move eastward. An upper level trough will move across the Gulf of Mexico toward Florida. The GFS model, from the surface to 700 mb, shows that a trough will move westward from its present position on top of Cuba and the Bahamas, to Florida, for the next few days.

Fresh easterly winds will prevail in the eastern Caribbean Sea and in the Tropical North Atlantic Ocean through Sunday night. The upper level cyclonic circulation center is on top of Cuba. Expect widespread rainshowers with thunder N of 15N between 70W and 80W through Sunday night. The winds and seas will subside gradually on Monday and Tuesday.

On Ambergris Caye this morning the North-NE wind has Ambergris Caye in the lee making the sea around our barrier reef flat calm. It's cloudy with rain. Today's expected high is 86f.

From Belmopan...

Again a very different weather. This morning there is a very large mass of cloud up north, although most of it is in Mexico, only covering Corozal, but there is another smaller one covering much of Orange Walk and parts of central Belize, the south is mainly in sunshine where there is no morning fog. There was significant rain in many parts over night, still some in some parts of the north and coastal central areas. There are cloud movements in many different directions, the Caribbean in white sort of from the north, then other warmer air up from the SW and the high level orange from the west.

Looks like today is already variable for different parts of Belize, and is going through changes this morning, sunshine in the south, clouds in the central and north, most rain now dying out.

The Cloud picture. A very confusing picture, cloud moving in different directions. Most rain dried up now, just a little but on a few locations of land, a little more out at sea.
