Unofficial reports reaching our news room indicate that the popular Wayo's Bar and Grill at Boca Del Río was robbed sometime after 10PM on Friday, May 25th. Witnesses say that four armed masked men entered the bar holding up patrons and staff. In the ordeal it is alleged that one of the male bartenders was shot. He was later transported to the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II, where he was stabilized. Police are investigating and we will continue following this developing story.

POLICE REPORT: On Friday 25th May 2018 about 11:30pm, San Pedro Police Personnel visited the San Pedro Polyclinic where they observed a male Hispanic person being treated for an apparent gunshot wound to the lower back of his head. The male person was learnt to be Osner Campos 26, a bartender of San Pablo Area, San Pedro Town.

Initial investigation revealed that about 11:20pm Campos and another bartender were working at Wayo's Bar located in the Boca Del Rio San Pedro Town. Two male persons entered the bar one of whom were armed with a chrome in colour pistol resembling a 9mm and the other with what appeared to be a sawed off shotgun. The male person with the pistol proceeded to the bar area where he demanded the contents of the cash register be placed in a bag he had. The other assailant waited at the entrance of the bar.

While the cash was being retrieved from the register by the other bartender, the person with the pistol fired a shot towards the bar area which ricocheted hitting Campos to the back of his head. Both male persons then made good their escape with an undetermined amount of cash.

Campos was airlifted to Belize City where is is listed in a stable condition at the KHMH. Police investigation continues.

We are proud of our staff who reacted calmly and dealt with this horrible experience as professionally as possible. Thank you to our patrons who also remained calm during the incident and looked out for each other, ensuring everyone was ok once the thieves left.

Unfortunately one of our employees was injured during the robbery. Although the staff complied with their demands, one of the thieves discharged his weapon at an inanimate object and either a ricochet or shrapnel from the object hit our employee in the upper body. He was rushed to Otto Rodriguez PolyClinic in San Pedro, he was flown last night to Karl Heusner Medical Hospital to ensure that there were no complications from his injury. He will be released from the hospital this am.

Thank you also to the San Pedro Police and QRT task force who arrived quickly, and was able to gather statements as well as surveillance footage to begin the process of investigating this crime immediately.

This incident saddens us all and goes against the nature of not only our establishment but the nature of this island. We ask everyone to send healing thoughts and prayers to our employee, that we work together to ensure that the perpetrators are caught and that we as a community will come together for solutions to eliminate such unholy disregard for human safety. Wayo's will continue to do everything in our power to ensure the safety of our staff and our patrons.

San Pedro bartender shot during armed robbery

Osner Campos, 26, a bartender who was on duty at the Wayos Bar in San Pedro town was shot once to his head during an armed robbery at the establishment last night and is in critical condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH).

Campos and another bartender were on duty when two armed robbers entered just after 11:20 p.m. One man was armed with a .9mm pistol while the other stood guard at the door with a shotgun.

The bandit with the handgun proceeded to the counter and demanded cash from the register, which he put in a bag.

As they left the establishment, the bandit with the pistol fired a single shot towards the bar area which ricocheted off the wall and hit Campos in the head.

Both men escaped with an undetermined amount of cash. Campos was transported to the San Pedro Polyclinic and later airlifted to Belize city for further treatment.
