Wolfe’s Woofers: The Last Word
Vernon, we missed you at the darts tournament practice this week,” I said.
“Yeah. I was on the mainland trying to keep peace in my family.”
“How did it go?”
“It was pretty bad. My old uncle is probably gonna be arrested. See, Uncle Selwynn and Auntie Zee are real poor. They don’t even have electricity where they live over by Roaring Creek so all they have to do for fun is to argue with each other.”
“What do they argue about?”
“Anything. But it’s usually about who gets the last word in an argument. My old Auntie just can’t help getting in that last word.”

Despite opposition, GOB accepts Israeli Police Training
Even though there was strong opposition against training provided by the Israeli police to members of the Belize Police Department, the Government of Belize (GOB) has proceeded with the program. Training began on Tuesday, June 26th and will culminate on July 4th. A group of Belizean protesters wrote to Prime Minister Dean Barrow and spoke to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrignton in an attempt to stop the training from taking place. They denounced the State of Israel for its atrocities against the Palestinians and their strong alliance to Guatemala and even led a protest outside of the Police Academy in Belmopan City on the same day the training was launched.

July Rainy Weather? Events and Mariachied on My Way Home
The forecast for the first week in July is calling for partly sunny skies with temperatures reaching 87. 8°F (3 1°C) with lows overnight down to a nice 75.2°F (2 4°C). According to NOAA’s cool satellite image I used above for the feature, there doesn’t look like there is much on its way from the east (which is usually the direction hurricanes come from). I have heard from a few people in planning stages of their vacation being concerned about what the weather is like in July as the forecast shows a lot of rain. If you are one of these people and want some reassurance – click through to see some wise vacation weather thoughts from Destination Expert Jean H.

What It Costs to Be Smuggled
Across the U.S. Border
Bribes and shakedowns. Days in hideaways without food. For many fleeing violence in Central
America, this is what thousands of dollars gets them on the journey to the United States.
Shortly before dawn one Sunday last August, a driver in an S.U.V. picked up Christopher Cruz at a stash house in this border city near the Gulf of Mexico. The 22-year-old from El Salvador was glad to leave the one-story building, where smugglers kept bundles of cocaine and marijuana alongside their human cargo, but he was anxious about what lay ahead.
The nearly 2,000-mile trip had already cost Mr. Cruz’s family more than $6,000 and brought him within sight of Brownsville, Tex. The remaining 500 miles to Houston — terrain prowled by the United States Border Patrol as well as the state and local police — would set them back another $6,500.
