Doctor Love: When love isn’t demonstrative enough
Dear Doctor Love,
I am engaged to a very good man—he is kind, generous and intelligent. He is, however, not outgoing in public. When we are walking, he won’t reach out and hold my hand, though he doesn’t pull away if I take his. If I hug him, he hugs me back, but he never takes the initiative. If we are with friends, he never puts his arm around my shoulders and to outsiders it can almost seem as though we’re not even together. Our private life is wonderful, but with company, he’s quiet and reserved.

Statement from the Government of Belize on Situation in Venezuela
The Government of Belize laments and condemns acts of violence against a Head of State, officials and the broader populace, such as those regrettably witnessed on August 4, 2018 in Caracas, Venezuela. Belize extends its well-wishes to President Maduro, his spouse and child, to all those present, and especially to those injured in yesterday’s attack.
At this difficult time, it is important to recall that Venezuela is a part of the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, and that our countries and people deserve to reach political, social and economic development through peaceful means alone.

Going Slow in Charming Caye Caulker, Part One
Early Friday afternoon we caught the water taxi from Ambergris Caye for a mini-holiday. 24 hours on lovely Caye Caulker. Just 30 minutes away from San Pedro and a very different feel. The motto of the island is GO SLOW – and I was reminded of it about 14 times but various salesmen and island characters.
The uncomplicated Caribbean vibe…the pastel colors…the sand roads…the ease of strolling down the strip for meals and the sunset…I couldn’t help but think – Why don’t I do this more often?
It really felt like being on vacation.
And before you ask…I stayed at SeaDreams Hotel. On the lagoon side just before the Split. And it was beach-chic perfection. I can’t say enough good things about this spot. But I’ll try. Tomorrow.

DECODING THE SECRETS OF AN ANCIENT MAYA CAVE
When archaeologist Holley Moyes first poked around Belize’s Actun Tunichil Muknal cave, the massive amount of bat feces impressed her. Sure, the ancient Maya pots and tools dazzled Moyes. But during early trips into Actun Tunichil Muknal, it was the piles of poop that alerted her to the uniqueness of this ancient site.
“There were seven or eight centimeters of almost pure bat guano and almost no charcoal, and I thought, ‘Hey, what is this all about?’” says the University of California, Merced, professor. Given that pine torches would’ve left a charcoal carpet, “it was a dead giveaway that bats were coming in, but people weren’t.”
Like many Maya sites, though, Actun Tunichil Muknal — Cave of the Crystal Sepulchre, known as ATM to researchers — generated as many mysteries as it solved. Why did the Maya seal the cave for centurylong breaks and then reopen it? Why did they journey deeper and deeper into the earth over time? What was the purpose of the human sacrifices that litter its chambers?
Belizeans are divided over the ICJ issue because of fear of Guatemala
By Wellington C. Ramos.
The decision by the Belize government to take the dispute between Britain and Guatemala over Belize that they inherited has the Belizean people divided. One group believes that the only way to settle this dispute with Guatemala is to take this case to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for final resolution.
Another group believes that there is no need for the people and country of Belize to take the Guatemalan dispute to the ICJ because Belize has already been accepted into the United Nations as an independent and sovereign nation with all of its boundaries and territories intact. Some Belizeans are asking what if we go to the ICJ and get a favourable ruling from the court and Guatemala insists on claiming our country, because the UN does not have a good record of enforcing ICJ court rulings. Other Belizean citizens are caught in the middle and do not know which group to support or join.
Statement on the Life and Legacy of Panthera Founder and Renowned Conservationist, Dr. Alan Rabinowitz
The Board and staff of Panthera, the global wild cat conservation organization, mourn the loss of our co-founder and one of the world’s most visionary and widely admired wild cat scientists, Dr. Alan Robert Rabinowitz, who died today after a journey with cancer.
Panthera CEO and President, Dr. Fred Launay, stated, “The conservation community has lost a legend. Alan was a fearless and outspoken champion for the conservation of our planet’s iconic wild cats and wild places. As a lifelong voice for the voiceless, he changed the fate of tigers, jaguars and other at-risk species by placing their protection on the agendas of world leaders from Asia to Latin America for the very first time.” In a career spanning more than three decades, Dr. Rabinowitz was, above all, a protector and global advocate for wild cats and other threatened wildlife, the diminishing lands in which they roam, and the often impoverished people living near these cats and other wildlife.
