This photo was taken at Noon local time today. They have started the paving of the airstrip today (the layer of sprayed tar has been down for a week or so).

Here are some current photos, just taken this morning, of the continued paving of the Caye Caulker Airstrip.

Barge with 9 large dumptrucks that deliver the hotmix from Belize City. I am told it takes the barge up to 6 hours to travel from BC to CC, so it leaves very late at night/early in the morning to arrive here at day break. At Western end of airstrip

I appeared they had used all of this mornings hotmix by the time I got there and they were loading the trucks to take them back to BC. I do not know if they bring more than one barge of hotmix over/day. I will head over there later this afternoon (after the Bristish Open is over ;-P ) and see what's going on.

Caye Caulker Airstrip Paving Completed

These were taken today. I didn't get over there yesterday, but I believe they finished paving yesterday.

I understand they are going to be installing in ground runway lighting, so I imagine that is the next step in the process...just a guess.

I'll try to stop and talk to someone tomorrow.

Thanks for the updates! This looks promising. Fingers crossed it opens earlier than anticipated. Like by September 14 smile

After much anticipation, it seems the final touches are being made for our airstrip to be re open very soon.

Just wondering how thick that runway is. I'm guessing the Tropic/Maya planes don't need much when it comes to runway density. And, to be frank, I know next to nothing about aviation.

I watched the whole project, from destruction through construction. I'd say the asphalt hotmix was laid down about 8" thick on top of a minimum 2 foot thick hard packed, mixed stone, sand & dirt sub base. Just guestimates.
