Why Choose Private Offshore Banking in Belize
Private offshore banking in Belize continues to increase in popularity. Through its continual demonstration of banking compliance with financial industry laws and legislation such as the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, or FATCA, Belize has established itself as a leader in safe, stable international banking locations. It is entirely normal to have questions about the privacy and stability of offshore banking in Belize when other banking options exist. Recently, Luigi Wewege, Senior Vice President of Caye International Bank in Ambergris Caye, Belize, provided answers to many of these questions as part of a webinar on why Belize is the leading international jurisdiction for banking in Central America.

87 Homeless After Another Big San Pedro Blaze
Tonight, 87 people from 10 families are homeless after another devastating fire on San Pedro. This one started early on Saturday morning around 1:30 am in the Boca Del Rio area. When the firefight was finally finished 3 hours later, 10 structures had been affected; fortunately no one was hurt. But, that doesn't mean that there isn't pain - Daniel Ortiz found that in abundance when he went to San Pedro today:... Daniel Ortiz reporting: Today, in the Boca Del Rio area, cleaning crews were already at work trying to clear away the substantial amount of debris left behind in yet another block burner that has devastated residents of San Pedro.

NEMO Organizes Relief Response
And while that recent history is troubling, the present moment is even more so for these 87 San Pedro residents. They lost everything, but NEMO will help them out with a handful of supplies until they can start to re-build their lives. We met with Minister Edmond Castro and his NEMO team in Ladyville this morning as they loaded their trucks with a cargo bound for San Pedro. Hon. Edmond Castro, NEMO Minister: "I am sorry for the loss for those families affected on the island of San Pedro in the Boca Del Rio area. As NEMO responsibility, we were out there to assess the situation." "NEMO has a standard basic package that we give to fire victims, some start-ups like mattresses. The number of persons will determine how many mattress you will receive, we will send food packs, we send a small table top stove, we send gas tanks, we send bedding and that kind of thing so we are sending for all 87 persons affected by that fire.."

Arson Caused Block Burner
Now while NEMO was assessing the damage and connecting with the fire victims, the Fire Department was also doing ITS part in investigating the cause of the fire and it's arson! Today Fire Chief Ted Smith told us that two houses were already on fire when they arrived but there was only so much they could do to contain the fire, so it spread and damaged 10 structures: Ted Smith, Fire Chief, Belize Nat'l Fire Service: "The fire started on the lower flat of the southwestern portion of a two story structure on Conch Shell Street, Boca Del Rio, San Pedro." "So far we have determined that the fire was an incendiary fire which means that the fire was lit by a person or persons who knew under the circumstances that the fire should not have been lit at the time."

Off Duty Cop Caught Murderer
And while the fire was the weekend's big news in San Pedro, things started badly from Friday when 50 year old Carlos Valdez was found stabbed to death in his apartment on Caribena Street. It happened at around 8:00 that night in a cluster of apartments above the White Horse Club. Police told us how a cop who lives there - was off duty in his room when he responded to find the killer fleeing:... ASP Alejandro Cowo- OC, CIB Belize City: "Police constable Mr. Campos, who resides in the same apartment building, was inside of his room along with his wife when he heard a commotion coming out from one of the rooms of the apartment. As a result, as he stepped out of his room he observed a male person running out from Mr. Valdez's room holding a knife and observed what looked like suspected blood on his shirt..."

Vicious Island Murder Leaves Witnesses Puzzled
So, it is a mystery as to what led to the stabbing - and as you heard, the family of the accused is suggesting that Gilbert Chanek may have had mental problems. It's the kind of disturbing scene that nobody wants to unfold in the privacy and comfort of their home, but that's exactly what happened at the home of Myrna Trujillo. She granted us an interview today, in Spanish. Here's what she told us about Valdez, her friend of 30 years:

Fruit Stall Robbery Foiled
There was a daring hold up this morning at a fruit stall on Coney Drive. It started off as an innocent sale: two men came by the stall to buy a banana and then they left. But when they came back, one of the men pulled out a gun on the fruit vendors. Fortunately, the gun snapped and he was able to wrest the gun away from the culprit. Here is the account from the fruit vendor's son. Courtney Weatherburne, reporter: "And these two guys came up to you guys, what did the guys say at first?" Voice of: Son: "Because they say…I guess they bought a banana from my mom. So my mom told them sure, she gave them the banana, she didn't charge them and then they came back and said the banana wasn't good and that it was rotten so my mom told then go ahead, grab another banana and my dad had the knife behind his back because he knew the guy had a gun."

Robbers Fired Six Shots
And police pretty much have the same story regarding this fruit vendor hold up, including another additional detail that the fruit vendors confirmed. During the struggle, the culprit fired 6 shots before he dropped the gun and ran off. Fortunately no one was hit. Here's the police account: ASP Alejandro Cowo, OC, CIB Belize City: "The first time they came to purchase a banana and then they came back, saw what was happening, then they came back a third time, when they came back the third time, they pulled out a fire arm and they robbed the person in charge of the place of a few dollars..."

Did Flavio Filch Santander's Funds?
On Friday, we told you about the Santander accountant who had allegedly misappropriated over two hundred thousand dollars. Today, the head of national crimes investigation, Joseph Myvett told us more about the allegations of Flavio's filching of funds: ACP Joseph Myvett - Head, NCIB: "On the second of August, the management of Santander Ltd. reported to the police that between June 2015 and June 2018 an audit was conducted by the Santander Group which revealed that a number of checks were unaccounted for. A further investigation led the company's auditors to discover that five of those checks were made out to Flavio Tzalam, who was the person responsible for the checks. A 21 year old from Seine Bight is at the Southern Regional Hospital recovering from a gunshot to the jaw. He was shot at 10:30 last night in the village outside a home where he was attending a function. At the time he could not speak, however, further investigations into this matter revealed that Augustine was socializing at a private residence in the village when he left to go to the back of the yard..."

This afternoon at the Mahogany Bay Beach Resort in San Pedro, Belize hosted the OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY of the Caribbean Regional Partnership Dialogue and Regional Preparatory Meeting for the Midterm Review of the SAMOA Pathway. That's a lot of words, but really it's about the fate of Small Island Developing States, or SIDS in an era of climate change and a world order that cares little about how countries like Belize fare. The Prime Minister put it in perspective:...

The Reporter

The National Fire Service has come under fire in San Pedro, where 87 persons have allegedly been left homeless by a blaze which occurred on Saturday at around 1:10am. Many residents have claimed that inadequate response and inadequate equipment were what caused the fire to spread to as many as ten homes. But today Fire Chief Ted Smith stated that "whether we had arrived with five trucks and 20 men, it would be extremely difficult to contain the fire because the members of the (Fire) Department don't have the opportunity to properly implement what we call the three-pronged attack within the area because of the close proximity."
