Is Sargassum hazardous to our health?
Besides aesthetically unpleasant, the Sargassum seaweed and the gases it emits as it rots along the shores has been proven to be hazardous to human health. Not only is it affecting the tourism industry and destroying marine life, but the seaweed can cause respiratory problems due to the high levels of toxic gases it omits when decaying. In the water, Sargassum can be harmless to humans, but once it lands on the beach and starts decomposing, it begins to release hydrogen sulfide gas, or H2S. Colorless, poisonous and with an unpleasant rotten-egg odor, the H2S effect is based on how much is inhaled, and for how long. Exposure to very high concentrations can quickly lead to death.

Belize~ Will Guatemala invade if Belize says No to ICJ?
By Richard Harrison: One of the fear tactics being used by promoters of yes to ICJ vote, to scare voters into going along with the yes vote, is that our allies will abandon us, and that Guatemala will invade if we say NO to ICJ. I do not believe that this is true, because: Belize and Guatemala agreed, at the UN and OAS, to solve the dispute peacefully. […]

7 of the World’s Most Picturesque Places to Poop
Belize makes it on the list of most picturesque places to poop. Seriously. As any seasoned traveler knows, while everybody poops, not everybody does it in the same way. Confronted with foreign toilets, you may be baffled as to what those extra buttons mean, or by the fact that it looks like a shower stall with foot grips. But in some cases, vacationing means a toilet with an incredible view. The expert jet setters at Lonely Planet have combed the world for the most picturesque lavatories on the planet. The resulting book, Toilets: A Spotter’s Guide, is a collection of more than 100 glorious lavatories from Alaska to India to Antarctica. We can’t guarantee they smell nice, but they certainly make up for it in ambiance.

Florida, US Gulf Coast on alert for brewing tropical threat
A tropical feature packing flooding downpours may gain strength as it crosses Florida and the Gulf of Mexico early this week. The feature, known as a tropical wave, produced torrential downpours and localized flooding as it crossed the northern Caribbean late this past week. “Through Labor Day, South Florida, central Cuba and the central and northwestern Bahamas can expect tropical downpours and locally gusty thunderstorms to be most prevalent,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said. People hoping to spend Labor Day at the beaches of South Florida will likely need to adjust their plans. “Flights into and out of Miami and Fort Myers area airports could face delays and cancellations on Monday,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Faith Eherts said.

FOX4's Zac Summers spoke with 67-year-old Sherris Stringham's son, who said Stringham was found dead under a bridge overnight Saturday. Police told family that four teenagers were trying to break down a gate outside of her home and she caught them, but she was struck on the head and knocked out. Police say the teens ransacked her home, dumped her body and took her SUV for a joyride before trying to set it on fire. The SUV was found abandoned along a dirt road on Thursday. Police have arrested four teens, but no one has been charged yet.

The Perfect Cast: Saltwater fly fishing hooks Columbians
However, for the prized trophies of saltwater fly fishing, Greg, Michael, and other veteran anglers make an annual fly fishing pilgrimage to the waters of Belize, targeting varieties of fish not typically found in South Carolina waters — mostly tarpon, bonefish, and permit. Landing a permit with a fly rod is the ultimate prize. Their silvery slender bodies camouflage them in the crystal-clear waters, and their acute senses of sight, smell, and hearing significantly add to the challenge. Along with bonefish, they’ve been dubbed one of the “grey ghosts of the flats.” Despite all the experience both Michael and Greg have accumulated between them, only Michael has hauled in a permit, and it took him three years to hook this prize. Greg hopes to catch his permit during their trip this year. “Getting a permit would be a huge accomplishment for me, but I’m looking forward to the trip regardless,” Greg says. Though coming up empty would be disappointing, for the dedicated saltwater fly fisherman being in a boat off the coasts of Belize or South Carolina would rarely rate as a horrible day.
