SP BTIA and SPTC commit to a cleaner San Pedro
Following the San Pedro Belize Tourism Industry Association’s (SP BTIA) Big Garbage Clean-up campaign on November 9th through the 12th, SP BTIA Chairwoman Tamara Sniffin and SP BTIA member Karen Brodie met with Mayor Daniel Guerrero. On Wednesday, November 21st, the trio reviewed the success of the clean-up campaign and discussed plans for better trash management on the island. The SP BTIA team also appealed for a solid commitment from Mayor Guerrero and San Pedro Town Board in addressing the situation.
In the meeting, SP BTIA mentioned that during the four-day clean-up campaign illegally disposed of trash was easily identifiable as to its origin. It became apparent that many businesses on the island are hiring individuals with trucks to dispose of their garbage, but the trash never makes it to the Transfer Station.
Cabinet approves Belize’s First National Trade Policy
On Wednesday, November 27th, members of the Cabinet approved Belize’s first National Trade Policy. The Policy is an outcome of the July 2016 National Trade Policy Framework, which has been developed following an extensive nationwide stakeholder consultation process. Coordinated by the Directorate General for Foreign Trade (DGFT) in the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Commerce, the Policy has been developed with technical assistance form the Commonwealth Secretariat under its flagship program the Hub and Spokes Program, aimed at Enhancing Trade Capacity Development in the African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (ACP). Through this program, Belize has benefited from the expertise of a Trade Advisor who provided integral support throughout the process of developing the Policy.
ACCSD lobbies stakeholders for support against Cayo Rosario Development
The Board of Directors for the Ambergris Caye Citizens for Sustainable Development (ACCSD) held an informative luncheon on Tuesday, November 27th for key tourism and business stakeholders on the island. Hosted by Matachica Resort, more than a dozen individuals were updated on the progress ACCSD is making in preventing the controversial development of Cayo Rosario located within the Hol Chan Marine Reserve.
First to speak was ACCSD Board member and President of the San Pedro Tour Guide Association Billy Leslie, who reviewed the history of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and the part ACCSD played in expanding the reserve in 2015. “We saw that this area on the leeward side of the island, the shoals, the mangrove islands, and bajos were essential to the health of the Hol Chan ecosystem and an important area for the fly-fishing industry. We worked closely with other agencies on the island along with local and national government to make it happen. Our goal was to prevent unsustainable developments like the one approved for Cayo Rosario from ever happening.
Taiwan helps Belize digitize Motor Vehicles License and registration system
The laid-back and tranquil lifestyle of Sanpedranos has changed over the years, as the occasional electric golf cart has given way to an increasing number of gas-powered vehicles, particularly larger vehicles such as sedans, taxi vans, and trucks have been imported on to the island. Despite the flag-stone paving of the principal streets, San Pedro now suffers many of the traffic ills which plague other urban areas, including traffic jams.
Regulating this new traffic environment will become easier as Belizeans can now more easily register and license their motor vehicles through a new digital computerized system, which the Government of Belize began implementing with the technical support and financial assistance of the Government of the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan in June 2017.

An Active and Destructive 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season Ends
Despite pre-season predictions of an average to below-average year, the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season was above average by most measures, with two U.S. hurricanes—Florence and Michael—causing unusually high death tolls and catastrophic damage in excess of $10 billion each. The 2018 tally of activity in the Atlantic was 15 named storms, 8 hurricanes, 2 intense hurricanes, and an Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) index of 129. The 1981 – 2010 seasonal averages were 12.1 named storms, 6.4 hurricanes, 2.8 intense hurricanes, and an ACE of 105.6. The 15 named storms, 8 hurricanes, and ACE index of 129 this year puts 2018 in the upper third for all of these quantities since the satellite era began in 1970.
The amount of activity in 2018 stands in stark contrast to seasonal forecasts that had called for a near- or below-average season. As explained in a weather.com analysis, this was due in part to two factors: the absence of anticipated El Niño conditions, and a significant warming of the tropical Atlantic in September, near the peak of the season. A record number of subtropical storms also pushed up the total number of named storms.
