Under the stewardship of Mrs. Maria Agelita Magaa and community members, the village held its Fiesta in August 1967.

San Joaquin Village was founded in the mid 1850's by the Magaa family who fled from La Guerra de Castas - The Caste War - in Yucatan, Mexico. Mr. Andres Magaa alomg with his wife Felipe Garcia de Magaa, and their son Vincente, travelled from Bacalar and eventuallt settled in present-day San Joaquin Village. Their safe Journey is attributed to the intercession of San Joaquin, the santa patron of Bacalar. The village was batized as San Joaquin in 1904.

Do you know about La Fiesta De San Joaquin?

The Fiesta honours the village's patron saint, San Joaquin, with novenas, a mass, and culminates in a grand fair! The fair has even evolved over the years and now features elements from other cultures in Belize.

The documentary includes interviews with community members and local experts who share the fiesta's history and meaning.
