Lost Their House on Christmas Day

The holidays were miserable and sad for the Chi family in San Pedro; their home burned down on Christmas morning. Juan Chi and his family were inside their home when the kitchen erupted into flames. They escaped and the fire was contained, but their home was destroyed. Here's more from the police.

ASP Alejandro Cowo, CIB - Eastern Division
"San Pedro police visited the Marina Drive in San Pedro Town, where upon arrival they observed an elevated board house engulfed in flames. The house is owned by one Mr. Juan Chi of that same address. Initial police information is that Mr. Chi was inside of his house along with two minors when he observed the eastern side of the building engulfed in fire; that is where the stove is located. As a result of that, he ran out for assistance and then he came back inside of the house whereby he received minor burns to his body. He was admitted and he was discharged on the same day from the Polyclinic from San Pedro. Up to now there is nothing to indicate that it's an arson. The fire department were there and they were canvassing the remains of the building to see...or if they can establish what is the cause of the fire."

6 members of the Chi family lived in the home.

The San Pedro Fire Department continues to investigate a fire that destroyed a family house on Tuesday, December 25th located near Marina Drive south of San Pedro Town. The fire was reported around mid-day, and even though the island fire department was swift in their response, the wooden structure was completely gutted by the blaze. The homeowner Juan Chi was inside the house along with two minors when the fire began. He received minor injuries when he tried to salvage some of his belongings and was then rushed to the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II, where he was treated and released the same day.

According to the official report from authorities, San Pedro Police visited the Marina Drive area where they observed an elevated board house engulfed in flames. The report indicates that the fire started on the eastern side of the building where the stove was located. Chi reportedly ran out of the house seeking assistance and then went back inside the house. San Pedro Christmas Day fire still under investigation

The San Pedro Fire Department’s investigation into a fire that destroyed a family home on the Marina Drive Area, south of San Pedro Town on December 25th, is still inconclusive. Arson has been ruled out, as the fire reportedly started from the kitchen. The official report states that the fire began on the eastern side of the building where the stove was located. Chi apparently ran out of the house seeking assistance, and then went back inside the home. He received minor injuries and was taken to the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II, where he was treated and released the same day.

Chi is employed at The San Pedro Town Council and initially received assistance from Hope Haven Children’s Home. He and his family are currently staying with family members and looking forward to a bright New Year as they work towards rebuilding their home.
