Well-known Belizean historian Joseph Sampson, distinguished in academia, as well as in political life, has passed away. The former Mayor of Dangriga who served under the People’s United Party between 1997 and 1998, died on Thursday evening. Originally from Sawai [Sah-Why] Street, the respected lecturer served his community as a youth organizer and as national coordinator for the Neighborhood Watch Program. He also held the post of Chairman of the People’s United Party executive. Aside from his political achievements, Sampson was also a lecturer at the University of Belize and Galen University. He was also a regular on Channel Five, where he was a political analyst during our coverage of the general elections. Joseph Sampson will be remembered as a firm advocate for democracy, cultural identity and national development.
