San Pedro Smile Center Dental Clinic volunteers brighten children’s smiles!
Dental volunteers and doctors provided free dental services to all children from Monday, February 18th to Thursday, February 28th at the San Pedro Smile Dental Clinic, located at the Holy Cross Anglican School (HCAS) in the San Mateo Area of San Pedro Town. This year’s volunteers and doctors included Dr. Richard Kim, Dr. Allan Libuano, Dr. George Lin, and Dr. Paul Roggow, Dr Mark Conover from Mankato State University in Mankato, Minnesota, USA and Eleanor Carrera, Dr Richard, Dr. Judy Treharne from Integrity Dental in Cottage Grove Minnesota and Dr. Mark Johnson and Joan Johnson.
Educating children and girls for employment and social protection
Investment in education to empower children and girls with the job skills to help them find employment, for social protection and to break the cycle of poverty is the burning concern of the Ministry of Labor, Local Government and Rural Development. An app to match job seekers to the jobs available was one of the solutions put forward at a two-day consultation hosted by the Labor ministry in collaboration with UNICEF at the Best Western Biltmore Hotel in Belize City on Monday and Tuesday, February 25-26.
GOB embraces Innovation for e-Government
Innovation in new products and services, exploiting the new infrastructure of the faster bandwidths from DigiNet and the host of automated, digitized electronic services the Government is rolling out, will be the key to new jobs, more earnings, and economic growth, Prime Minister Hon. Dean Barrow promised at a business forum hosted by the Economic Development Council at the Belize City Center on Thursday morning, February 21.
Leading the charge to success along the information superhighway is the nationally owned Belize Telemedia Ltd, which is rolling out its new fiber optic internet service, rebranded “Digi,” to the country. Independent speed tests show Belize now has the best mobile service in the region, Barrow proudly boasted, not just in Central America and the Caribbean, but in Latin America!
Belize and Cuba renew medical agreement
The continued cooperation between Belize and Cuba in the health sector was renewed on Wednesday, February 27th, at a signing ceremony in the capital city of Belmopan. The renewal of the agreement is to extend the presence of the Cuban Medical Brigade in Belize that not only benefits Belizeans nationwide but strengthens and develops the health system in Belize. Signing on behalf of the Government of Belize was Minister of Health Honourable Pablo Marin, while Ambassador Lisette Perez signed on behalf of Cuba. Also present at the signing was Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Health, Omar Figueroa and Belize’s Ambassador to Cuba, Her Excellency Lou-Anne Burns Martinez.
Belize 2019 Inter-District Rugby 7’s Tournament begins!
The Belize 2019 Inter-District Rugby 7’s Tournament began this past weekend on Sunday, February 24th at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk Town. This year’s tournament is seeing the participation of San Pedro Sharks, BATSUM RFC, Orange Walk (OW) Black Mambas, Cayo Baymen, Kings Park Scorpions and Belmopan Spartans.
The current standings have BATSUB RFC at the top of the chart with 42 points, followed by Orange Walk Black Mambas with 13 points and Kings Park Scorpions and Cayo Baymen with a negative two points each. San Pedro Sharks has negative 15 points and at the bottom of the chart is Belmopan Spartans with negative 22 points.
The second round of the tournament is expected to be held sometime in May 2019, at a location and date to be announced.
NICH Comparsas Fashion Show Kicks Off Carnaval 2019
The San Pedro House of Culture officially kicked off the Carnaval 2019 celebrations on Friday, March 1, 2019 with a Carnaval Comparsa Fashion Show.
Those in attendance enjoyed brief history of carnaval comparasas as models showed off their costumes and danced for the crowd. Here are some pictures of the event. The San Pedro House of Culture is currently hosting a photographic exhibit of carnaval, feel free to drop by and enjoy some pictures by photographer Karen Brodie.

On Saturday, March 2nd, 2019, members of the Belize Police Department participated in the annual, Kidney Walk. The walk was organized by the Kidney Association of Belize; and the purpose is a continued effort by the association to educate and bring awareness of kidney related disease to the people of Belize. This year the walk was celebrated under the theme "save us today so we can save others tomorrow".

Police Investigate Two Reports of Robbery
Police are investigating two reports of robbery – one in San Ignacio and the other in Hattieville Village.
Police were summoned to Burns Avenue in San Ignacio sometime around 2:30 this morning and found Pedro Cruz, 60, a tour guide of San Ignacio Town, lying on the ground with head injuries.
Prime Minister Faces Backlash for Attack on Abel
Prime Minister Dean Barrow, during an interview with the media last week, revealed that the government had filed a formal complaint against Supreme Court Judge Courtney Abel, who recently handed down a ruling in favor of Belize Bank in a case against the Tax Commissioner of Belize.
Early Morning Murder – Taxi Driver Killed
Police were summoned to Reggae Street early this morning March 2nd., where they found Taxi-Driver Walter Beaton, 48, of Reggae Street, Belize City.
The victim was found in the drain in front of his house with gunshot wounds to his chest and left arm.
Valentine charged for PG Shooting
Punta Gorda Police have managed to lay several charges against one of two men who were caught red-handed trying to shoot an individual in Punta Gorda Town on Monday morning.
While Police had initially released the names of the two suspects, only one of the men, identified as PG resident Albert Valentine, 24, has been charged.
Belmopan Residents Stop Second Demolition of Family Home
Residents of Oxtocah Street in the Maya Mopan area of Belmopan yesterday prevented a backhoe from demolishing the home of Nicolasa Cus and her two young daughters. The mother and daughters had been squatting on the public land for the past 12 years, but the land was sold thereafter to someone else.

Missing woman found dead in Valley of Peace
Joan Sharon Gaboural, 18, a resident of Valley of Peace in Cayo District was found dead yesterday evening.
Gaboural went missing on Tuesday of last week when she left home and never returned. Since then, her family and friends had been searching for her.
Derek Aikman passes away
Derek Aikman, 59, a former politician and member of the National Assembly of Belize has passed away.
Aikman was first elected to Parliament as a member of the UDP in 1984, defeating incumbent Prime Minister George Cadle Price in what was considered a major upset.
Body of woman found in Valley of Peace, Cayo
The nude body of a woman was found this afternoon in Valley of Peace, Cayo District.
According to reports, the body was found with stab wounds.
Shopkeeper robbed at gunpoint in Hattieville
Police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred last night in Hattieville, Belize District.
Jahvinnia Neal,20, a shopkeeper at Stock Up “N” Go reported that around 6:45 p.m. she was seated behind the counter when a man entered the establishment with a brown handgun.
Tour guide robbed of his gun and personal documents in San Ignacio Town
Authorities are investigating an early morning robbery that occurred in San Ignacio Town, Cayo District.
According to reports, Pedro Cruz,60, a tour guide from San Ignacio told police that he was walking on Burns Avenue when he was attacked from behind.
Boyfriend pleads guilty to assault of partner’s sister
Twenty-four-year-old Stephan Pasos took the rap for a charge of indecent assault on his partner’s sister which was reported on Thursday.
He pleaded guilty before Magistrate Emmerson Banner and told the court that he was intoxicated by a variety of alcohol known as “Spanish Fly.”
Burrell Boom man assaulted pregnant girlfriend gets out on bail
Forty-four-year-old Edison Alexander Dawson of Burrell Boom made bail on Friday after pleading not guilty to a charge of harm on his domestic partner, who is three months pregnant with their second child.
Man shot and killed in Belize City last night
There was a murder on the southside of Belize City last night.
The victim was found with gunshot injuries in a drain on Reggae Street.
