Also with the most recent Open Your Eyes, and other specials The San Pedro Sun Belize’s National Lionfish Management Strategic Plan 2019-2023 Launched Blue Ventures, in partnership with the Belize Fisheries Department, officially launched Belize’s National Lionfish Management Strategy Plan 2019-2023 during a ceremony at the Belize Coastal Zone Management training room in Belize City on Thursday, February 24th. The launch saw the attendance of conservationists, tour operators, governmental and non-governmental organizations, media corps and invited guests. The Belize National Lionfish Management Strategy Plan describes how to design and implement an integrated approach to lionfish management, incorporating environmental, social and economic well-being goals. PAHO calls for countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to prepare for possible outbreaks of dengue The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has called for countries in the Region of the Americas to prepare for a timely response to possible outbreaks of dengue. The disease is endemic in the Region and, since its reintroduction in the 1980s, has caused cyclical outbreaks and epidemics every three to five years. The first dengue epidemic with over one million cases occurred in the Region in 2010. Three years later, in 2013, the first epidemic with more than two million cases occurred. At the beginning of 2019, there was an increase in cases compared to the same period of 2018. “Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes that is widespread in the Americas,” said Dr. Marcos Espinal, Director of the Department of Communicable Diseases and Environmental Determinants of Health. Annual awardees are selected randomly from among Belizeans age 65 or older with an active electricity account registered in their name at their residence. Waivers of fees for other services are also granted. BEL’s Golden Citizen Program commenced in 2012 and 810 new awardees are being added this year. In the coming weeks, employees will visit other beneficiaries to present certificates of award and check on their wellbeing. Ambergris Today Child Stimulation Month 2019 Opening Parade Child Stimulation Month 2019 kicked off countrywide under the theme "Hug Me, Listen to Me, Read with Me – Help Me Grow". Like clockwork, Child Stimulation Month commences on the first day of March every year, with it bringing an array of activities for the pre-school children of San Pedro. Pre-Schools on the island celebrated the opening of Child Stimulation Month with a parade through the main streets of San Pedro. Special Envoy to host forum on ‘Hate Crimes Given the recent increase in cyber bullying and other hate crimes, the office of the Special Envoy for Women and Children, Kim Simplis Barrow, in partnership with the National AIDS Commission and with the support of the Equality and Justice Alliance will host a forum on ‘hate crimes’. The forum on ‘hate crimes’ will be held on March 7, 2019 at the Best Western Plaza. His name was Ce Acatl topiltzin Quetzalcoatl the Maya called him K'uk'ulkan which means "The Plumed Serpent." Kukulkan reach Mayab or Maya which was the name of Yucatan peninsula before the Europeans came. Kukulkan wisdom impress the lords and they respected him. The people lived in conflict but Kukulkan convince the lords to build a new city and he named it Mayapan, meaning "Standard of the Maya people". According to the Books of Chilam Balam when the city of Mayapan was build the people became known as Maya. The word Mayab or Maya can mean "Few ,Not many" or also "The choosen people." Kukulkan lived among the Maya for some time and then continued his journey through Mesoamerica. The Books of Chilam Balam speak about the prophecies of the return of K'uk'ulkan. Channel 5 Former Minister Derek Aikman Passes Politician and former UDP Minister Derek Aikman has passed. Aikman served in the House of Representatives as an area representative for the Freetown constituency in the 1980s when he defeated the late George C. Price. Belize City Taxi Driver Murdered Forty eight year old taxi driver Walter Beaton was found dead this morning in the old capital. His body was discovered in a drain on Reggae Street. Police say Beaton was shot multiple times. According to police, Beaton had arrived home when he was ambushed by an unknown gunman. The Reporter Why We Must Stand for Country Many activists and inspirational speakers and politicians talk to us about ‘people power;’ they use various slogans and graphics to identify with such…but what does that really mean? In the last election we saw political paraphernalia that said ‘Power to the People.’ When one thinks of power to the people, one thinks of applying muscle to purpose and not taking advantage of our people’s power to elect and unfortunately empower an elite few of the party to rule over our land and people. Police Charge Corozal Residents For Armed Robbery Of Money-Changers Police have arrested and charged four residents of Corozal Town with several offences in relation to the armed robbery last Thursday at the Northern Border. Zandon Myers, 23, of 4th Avenue, Eugene Myers, 29, of Alta Mira, and Randolph Crawford, 23, and Joshua Hall, 21, both of Snapper Street were arrested and charged with seven counts of Robbery, 12 counts of Attempted Murder, two counts of Keeping an Unlicensed Firearm, and two counts of Keeping Unlicensed ammunition. Body Of Missing Teen Identified Police have confirmed that Joan Gabourel, 18, of Valley of Peace Village, Cayo, who was reported missing last week, was stabbed and chopped to death. As we reported earlier, Gabourel went missing from home last Tuesday and was reported missing on Thursday. Her decomposed body was discovered yesterday afternoon around 1:30 p.m., in a cane field off the Valley of Peace Road. Derek Aikman Passes On The Reporter has received reports of the passing of former UDP Minister of Government, Derek Aikman. Mr Aikman became the Area Representative for the Freetown Division in 1984, having unseated the late George Price of the PUP. This was our final night at a week-long adventure camp on Long Caye, part of the Belize Barrier Reef System, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Belize PM, PAHO discuss ‘priority health issues’ The Washington, D.C.-based Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) says its director, Dr. Carissa Etienne, and Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow have been discussing “a variety of priority health issues” for Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member-state. PAHO said on Monday that both parties also discussed PAHO’s technical cooperation during an official meeting in Belize’s capital, Belize City. “The importance of achieving universal health coverage without leaving anyone behind, as stated by the 2030 United Nations Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted in 2015 by countries of the world, including Belize, was also discussed,” said PAHO in a statement.
