PAHO calls for countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to prepare for possible outbreaks of dengue
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has called for countries in the Region of the Americas to prepare for a timely response to possible outbreaks of dengue. The disease is endemic in the Region and, since its reintroduction in the 1980s, has caused cyclical outbreaks and epidemics every three to five years. The first dengue epidemic with over one million cases occurred in the Region in 2010. Three years later, in 2013, the first epidemic with more than two million cases occurred. At the beginning of 2019, there was an increase in cases compared to the same period of 2018. "Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes that is widespread in the Americas," said Dr. Marcos Espinal, Director of the Department of Communicable Diseases and Environmental Determinants of Health.

Doctor Love: Healthy Mind
Dear Doctor Love, I am a licensed Addiction Counselor and couples therapist and I recently saw one of your earlier columns in the San Pedro Sun. It was a letter from a woman whose marriage was crumbling due to her husband's continuous use of pornography. In your answer to her you labeled it a "Sexual Addiction". In a marriage where there is not a mutual acceptance of porn use and it is causing stress, it has become easy to use the excuse that he is suffering a porn addiction.

Why We Must Stand for Country
Many activists and inspirational speakers and politicians talk to us about 'people power;' they use various slogans and graphics to identify with suchbut what does that really mean? In the last election we saw political paraphernalia that said 'Power to the People.' When one thinks of power to the people, one thinks of applying muscle to purpose and not taking advantage of our people's power to elect and unfortunately empower an elite few of the party to rule over our land and people.

All the festivities started last night! The town council has a serious calendar this year. Today, the kids will be in the park painting and partying.

5 reasons to protect mangrove forests for the future
To the uninitiated, mangroves might appear to be merely coastal cousins of inland forests, but these rich ecosystems support the planet and people in unique ways, from providing breeding grounds for fish to carbon storage, to protection against flooding. Yet despite their importance, mangrove forests are under threat. Over a third have already disappeared, and in regions such as the Americas they are being cleared at a faster rate than tropical rainforests. Much of that clearance is to reclaim land for agriculture, industrial development and infrastructure projects.

Enjoying Belize in the moment
The kids had been waiting all week for the hermit crab races. When Luis, our lead counselor, announced the evening's activity, they shoved aside their slices of key lime pie and disappeared into the shadows of moonlit coconut palms in search of perfect crustacean competitors. My 8-year-old, Reid, whom the counselors dubbed "Shark Bait" for his uncanny ability to spy sharks whenever snorkeling, was back within minutes, wielding a snapping blue crab the size of a dinner plate. This was our final night at a week-long adventure camp on Long Caye, part of the Belize Barrier Reef System, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Much of our week's experience reminded me of my North American childhood summer camp, but with a tropical and a multi-age twist.
