The Government of Belize (GOB) has moved swiftly to avoid the threat of being sanctioned by the European Union, by amending the regulations for both the International Financial Services Commission and the International Business Companies (IBC) Act. Minister of Investment, Trade, and Commerce, Hon. Tracy Panton introduced bills with these amendments, which were rushed through their three readings for swift approval with bi-partisan support in the House of Representatives in Belmopan last Friday, March 15th. Tamandua on Ambergris Caye
For the second time this year, we received a call about a tamandua (anteater) on Ambergris Caye. This little lady was found wandering around Island Academy last night and then captured by the caretaker. A friend of ours contacted us on their behalf, as they were unsure what to do with the animal at this point. Tamandua's are native to Belize. They are usually found in forested areas, living in tall trees, eating termites and ants. As Ambergris Caye becomes more developed, they are one of many species of wildlife loosing their habitat. Since the area where this anteater was found is heavily trafficked by vehicles, people, and dogs, the decision was made to relocate this beauty to a more suitable habitat, away from the excitement of city life.

To Go or Not to Go A Sit-Down With Senator Valerie Woods
Perhaps the most recent public proponent of the YES to the ICJ vote on April 10th has been Senator Valerie Woods. Woods is a Senator politically appointed to represent the People’s United Party, which has officially taken a NO to the ICJ stance. We thought it would be enlightening to sit with Woods to find out what prompted her to come to that decision, and also if she envisions any repercussions from the Party she represents.

EU blacklist: Cooperation or Coercion?
On 12 March, the Council of the 28-nations European Union (EU) placed 15 small territories on a list of what it calls ‘non-cooperative jurisdictions”. What the EC considers these territories to be “non-cooperative” about reveals the raw exercise of power by the strong over the weak. In this case, the firm intention of the EU is to impose its tax policies upon other nations through strong-arming. The language that the EU uses speaks of cooperation, but it sounds more like coercion. The targeted countries must either surrender to the EU’s demands to raise their taxes or face consequences. The EU Council has specifically directed that the EU member states “take the revised EU list of non-cooperative jurisdictions into account” in aid, trade, and financing.
