Wolfe’s Woofer: Fresh Water Catfish
“It’s hard to believe neither of you have ever eaten catfish,” I said.
“Mr. Dennis, we from the island,” Mario said. “We never had no freshwater fish.”
“That’s right,” Vernon agreed.
“When we get back to the lodge this evening, I’m cooking up catfish and fritters,” I said. “You two are in for a treat.”
We were fishing on New River just above where it empties into Chetumal Bay. The owner of the lodge advised us where to haul in some freshwater catfish.
Doctor Love: Granddaughter, Wife, Mother
Dear Doctor Love,
I grew up with my grandparents, and while I love them very much, it infuriates me how mean my grandfather is towards women. I never see him raise a finger to help around the house. He expects the women to cook, serve his food and clean up afterwards. He often makes comments about my grandmother’s age, her appearance and ridicules her “foolish ideas.” In public he makes crude remarks about pretty girls and rude remarks about women in general. My grandmother doesn’t react when he does this, but I can see that it affects her, and it bothers me.

Ban Roundup/Glyphosate in Belize
The recent landmark decision in American courts of DeWayne Johnson vs Monsanto, where he was awarded 289 Million dollars because the courts found Monsanto culpable for him developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) has more than 4000 individuals lining up to take Monsanto to court. Not only was it determined that Monsanto hid the risk associated with their cancer causing products, they found that Monsanto acted with "malicious intent" to try to cover up the cancer causing effects of Roundup, who's active ingredient is Glyphosate.
We are asking the Pesticides Control Board of Belize to do the right thing to Protect the People and Environment of Belize, and immediately stop the importation and BAN further importation of these cancer causing products, which are used heavily along our waterways by the Government of Belize.
Congratulations Ms. Debra Baptist-Estrada!
In an institution largely dominated by men, 20-year Belize Department of Immigration veteran Debra Baptist-Estrada has consistently refused bribes and other incentives to look the other way. As Port Commander of Belize’s only international airport, Ms. Estrada worked with U.S. officials last spring to crack open a drug and human smuggling operation to the U.S. and Europe. After being transferred to Belize’s northern border this summer, Ms. Estrada continued to bring her incorruptible style to the job, enforcing immigration laws that had not been enforced for a very long time, and rejecting bribes to look the other way. While many might shrug off corruption as “the human condition,” Ms. Estrada is quietly and courageously effecting change and strengthening the rule of law.

Friday Afternoon On Ambergris Caye: El Fogon Restaurant and A Shimmering Shell Bar
Just a few months back, Jeff and I were eating a ridiculously great lunch at El Fogon Restaurant in San Pedro. Jeff gave it his ultimate stamp of approval – for atmosphere and food – when he said “we should bring my mom here”.
And so, now that she is visiting with her friend Ken, we did. Here are pictures of lunch at the DELICIOUS El Fogon Restaurant and then a quick trip to the west side of Ambergris Caye for a bit of wading, shelling, swimming and fishing and a beautiful pink sand bar. The food was great – these dishes are my FAVORITES. The conch fritters are the best I’ve ever tasted. The pibil salbutes are to die for. And the key lime pie. Frozen, twangy, with lots of graham cracker crust underneath…YUM.
