The San Pedro Sun has confirmed that 71-year-old Alberto Samid was detained in San Pedro Town on Friday, April 5th. Samid, who is also known as 'Rey de la Carne' in Argentina, is one of INTERPOL's most wanted men. He has a pending legal case in his country for fraud and tax evasion.

Earlier today, INTERPOL had warned about Samid's possible intentions to head to Belize. Hours later, he was arrested at a unit south of San Pedro Town.

Argentinian police on their way to Belize to extradite fugitive Alberto Samid

While 71-year-old Argentinian fugitive Alberto Samid remains detained at the San Pedro Police Station, after being red-flagged by INTERPOL for a legal case in his country on fraud and tax evasion, The San Pedro Sun learned that two law enforcement officers from Argentina are arriving in Belize on Sunday, April 7th to seek his extradition. Although Belize and Argentina do not share an extradition treaty, reports are they could apply a reciprocal mechanism to take Samid back to Argentina.

According to Argentinian authorities, he left the country illegally, and then made his way to Panama before arriving in Belize City on March 26th. On Friday, April 5th, INTERPOL issued an outstanding warrant for Samid. He was described in the warrant as a violent person. Later that day, he was spotted south of San Pedro Town, where police nabbed him without issue and escorted him to the police station where he remains.

Alberto Samid transported to Belize City for possible extradition to Argentina

Just before midday, Monday, April 8th, 71-year-old Argentinian fugitive Alberto Samid was transported to Belize City from the police station in San Pedro Town under the custody of Belizean and Argentinian police officers. Samid had been in detention since Friday, April 5th, after INTERPOL issued an outstanding warrant for his arrest indicating that he was wanted in Argentina for tax evasion and fraud. In Belize City, he will be further processed for his possible extradition to Argentina. Belize does not have an extradition agreement with the South American country.

The Argentinian authorities are hopeful that Samid is expelled from Belize by reciprocity, which is a practice of exchanging things for mutual benefit, like privileges granted by one country to another. The San Pedro Sun has been reliably informed that his expulsion order has been penned and that Samid would be extradited from Belize. The Argentinian police officers, who arrived in Belize on Sunday, April 7th to speed up Samid’s expulsion, did not comment on the issue and only mentioned that he was taken to Belize City for further processing regarding his extradition.

Alberto Samid expelled from Belize and sent back to Argentina

71-year-old Argentinian Alberto Samid is currently on his way to Argentina, after being expelled from Belize on Monday, April 8th. Under the watch of Belizean and Argentinian Police officers, the wanted man was escorted from San Pedro Town to Belize City, where he was processed for deportation. It is alleged that he lied to Belizean immigration authorities when he entered the country, saying that the purpose of his visit was for vacation, when in fact, he was fleeing Argentinian law. He left Belize shortly after 5PM on a flight bound to El Salvador with an additional stop in Bogota, Colombia before heading to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he is expected to arrive today, Tuesday, around 10PM Argentinian time.

When asked why he came to Belize, the Argentinian magnate said, “I just went on holiday for a weekend, because I had a lot of stress,” he said. Samid’s family objected to the expulsion, claiming that it was illegal, and that during his detention in Belize, he was ill-treated and was not allowed to speak to his family, who travelled to Belize on Sunday, April 7th. When Samid arrives in Argentina, he will be taken before a judiciary court, where he will be tried for tax evasion and other offenses after fleeing the country. If found guilty, he could serve up to seven years in prison.
