The San Pedro House of Culture invites you to join us and elaborate creative sawdust masterpieces on Good Friday starting @ 7 am in front of the Catholic Church.

One of the most beautiful cultural tradition of Antigua, Guatemala is the way they celebrate lent and Easter week by creating amazing & intricate sawdust carpets. Those traditions have travel to catholic communities in Belize and the Benque House of Culture, Banquitas House of Culture and the San Pedro House of Culture are responsible for elaborating the beautiful sawdust carpets in their respective communities.

Each year families make sawdust carpets, creating their own designs in order to honor the passing of Jesus Christ, as well as the Virgin Mary. Colored sawdust is used to make these elaborate carpets.
The Good Friday procession walks over the carpets.

Good Friday sawdust carpets in San Pedro Town

The practice of creating Easter sawdust carpets is a well- known tradition in the Roman Catholic religion. In San Pedro, the carpet greeted the religious procession that took place Friday.
