Accused of running over a jaguar, Belizean pilot Efrain Guerrero released from detention in Mexico
Islander and pilot Efrain Guerrero has been released from a Chetumal City jail in Quintana Roo, Mexico. On Monday, April 15th, he was accused of ‘poaching’, after he allegedly hit a jaguar with his vehicle while driving with his family from Cancun. The accusation has been refuted by Guerrero’s family, particularly his pregnant wife Tanisha Morales, who was traveling with him at the time of the incident. She explained that around 9PM, a jaguar, a protected species in Mexico, suddenly leaped onto the highway in front of them and Guerrero tried to manoeuvre out of the way.

Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. of the U.S. Embassy Mr. Keith Gilges hosted an official ceremony and reception yesterday to recognize and honor the Embassy’s “Woman of the Year 2019” Ms. Sharon Matola. The event featured remarks by Chargé Gilges, Minister of State for the Ministry of Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment, and Sustainable Development Hon. Omar Figueroa, the Co-Founder of the Belize Center for Environmental Studies Ms. Lou Nicolait, and the Founding Director of the Belize Zoo and the Embassy’s “Woman of the Year” 2019 Ms. Sharon Matola.

James Bus Line Introduces Ticket System
James Bus Line, one of the biggest operators in the country, based in Punta Gorda, announced on April 17th that it has implemented a ticketing system, the first in more than a decade. Commuters travelling south will now be able to purchase tickets at either the Belize City terminal or the Belmopan terminal.

Guatemalan Cyclists Sweep 1st, 2nd & 3rd Place In Cross Country Race
Guatemalan Julio Padilla has won the 91st running of the Belize Cross Country Cycling Classic. He was followed by two other Guatemalans for 2nd and 3rd, an American in 4th and Belizean Giovanni Lovell to round out the top 5 in 5th. place. Those results are unofficial and we will update with official information once it is received.

The Holy Saturday Race Is Off To A Great Start
A brilliant sunrise blanketed the BTL Park this morning as the cyclists arrived for the most grueling race in Belize. At exactly 5.50am this morning a field of 105 Pro-Cyclist are off to the greatest race in Belize, the 91st. annual cycle race of 144.8 miles (233Km) to San Ignacio Town and back to Belize City is predicted to be dynamic and a fast race that includes 88 Belizeans, 5 Mexicans, 8 Americans and 3 Guatemalans.

Belize hosts 91st Cross Country Classic
Belize hosted its 91st annual Cross Country Cycling Classic today and saw 3 Guatemalans take home the top three prizes amid tumultuous cross-border relations ahead of a historic and controversial referendum on an age-old territorial claim. This year’s race will surely be remembered given the high tension and intense national spotlight on this issue but the race, now known internationally, has a long and rich history from humble beginnings.

Elena Smith’s second bid for BNTU presidency uncontested
Current President of the Belize National Teacher’s Union (BNTU), Senator Elena Smith, will serve a second term as the union has announced that her bid will be uncontested at the upcoming national convention to be held on April 24. Smith told Breaking Belize News that she was “surprised and humbled” by the announcement, adding that she feels the gesture validates the work she has done during her first tenure.

Guatemalans take top 3 spots in the 2019 cross country classic
With only 18 days to Belize’s historic national referendum on whether or not to take Guatemala’s claim on Belize’s territory to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Guatemala is taking home the Garland and each of the race’s top 3 spots. Sweeping many station prizes from Belize City to San Ignacio and back, the Guatemalans led the peloton with an almost 4-minute gap on the highways of Belize.

Belize’s ranking on World Press Freedom Index hits five-year low
This year, Belize’s ranking on the World Press Freedom Index (WPFI), hit its lowest point since 2015. The WPFI, which is prepared by Reporters Without Borders (RSF for its acronym in French), measures the media freedom situation based on an evaluation of pluralism, independence of the media, quality of legislative framework and safety of journalists in each country and region.

The San Ignacio and Santa Elena Easter fair comes alive today. Belizeans across the country woke up early to view the highly anticipated Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic. After the peloton of cyclists arrive in San Ignacio and turn back to Belize City, many will head to the fair to enjoy the mechanical rides, live band, food and drinks.

Reports to our newsroom indicate that there was a home invasion in the Bradley’s Bank area of Santa Elena town last night. Two armed masked men entered a home and stole a significant amount of cash around 7:00 last night.

Godwin Buckley, prominent JP in Santa Elena passes away
Godwin Buckley, a senior Justice of the Peace, former councilor of the San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town Board, and a former sergeant of the Belize Defence Force has passed away. Buckley passed away around 3am at his Santa Elena home on George Price Highway.

Belize Keeps Up Strong Tourism Growth in 2019
Belize’s surging growth in 2018 has continued into the new year. After one of the fastest growth rates in tourist arrivals of any Caribbean destination last year, Belize has seen a 6.3 percent increase in the first quarter, according to new data from the Belize Tourism Board. That represents a total of 158,290 stayover arrivals in the first three months of 2019. The tourism surge has come as Belize has welcomed a host of new flight routes from North America, while its hotel sector continues to see a boom.
