The Laws of Belize require that registered voters in Belize be given the opportunity to participate in a referendum in relation to any proposed settlement of the Belize/Guatemala Dispute.
Today, May 8th, 2019 is the day that Belizeans get to go out and decide on an option presently before us.
The Government of Belize encourages all registered voters in Belize to go out and exercise their right to vote!
No Voter’s Identification Card needed for Referendum Day
The Elections and Boundaries Department hereby reminds electors who wish to vote in the May 8th, 2019 Belize Territorial Dispute Referendum that they are allowed to vote WITH OR WITHOUT an identification card.
The Department encourages electors to exercise their right to vote in this Referendum. Remember, your vote is SACRED and SECRET!
Employees to be Allowed the Prescribed Period for Voting
The Elections and Boundaries Department wishes to remind employers that they are required to grant employees “reasonable time off for voting.”
Section 29 Offences states:
(1) Every employer shall, on polling day, allow every voter in his employ a reasonable time during the prescribed period for voting, and no employer shall make any deduction from the pay or other remuneration of any such voter or impose upon or exact from him any penalty by reason of his absence during such period.
(2) Any employer who, directly or indirectly refuses to grant, or by intimidation, undue influence or in any other way, interferes with the granting of reasonable time to any voter in his employ during the prescribed period of voting as in this section provided, shall on summary conviction be liable to a fine not exceeding two thousand dollars or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding one year.
