Girl Fight Leads to Murder in Corozal
A teenaged girl was murdered last night in Corozal. 19 year old Anna Villanueva was hanging out and drinking at a friend's house on 4th Street North when another 19 year old, Zeyna Armstrong, rode past on a bike hurling threats and insults at them. Armstrong finally approached Villanueva which led to the deadly brawl. Courtney Weatherburne has more details on this killing. A friendly Sunday night visit turned deadly for 19 year old Anna Villanueva. Villanueva was walking down 4th Street North when she saw her friend who lives at this house. Villanueva stopped by and they stood in front of the house to catch up.

Cops Recovered Knife
Now, police have Armstrong in custody and expect to bring charges soon. Today, at the press briefing, police confirmed the details of Villanueva's murder. They also said that they have not officially established a motive and that they are no reported cases of prior confrontations between the girls. ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch: "Corozal police were called to an area on Tenth Avenue and Fourth Street North responding to a stabbing incident where upon arrival they observed a dark complexion female lying on the side of the street apparently motionless..."

Family Loses Two Members To Murder Days Apart
And from that killing in Corozal, we turn now to Saturday night's murder in Belize City. 21 year-old Denzel Flowers, a resident of the Jane Usher Boulevard area, was shot and killed on Saturday night right in front of his family's home on Central American Boulevard, in the Port Loyola area. He went across the street to buy food, and while he was waiting, an unknown gunman caught him off-guard and shot him multiple times before anyone realized what was happening. His family heard the barrage of gunshots from inside their home, and they rushed out onto the street, only to find him bleeding to death.

Civilian Shot and Killed Robber On The Run
Tonight, a 23 year old is dead - killed by an armed civilian after he had just robbed a grocery store on Sunday morning. There's no nice way to say it, the fact is there are many in the public applauding the man who took out his weapon and killed this robber as he was fleeing. And police seem all too happy to keep to that tidy narrative - because the perpetrator Shemar Nunez was known to them as a criminal. End of story: one bad egg gone. But, it's not that simple, not at all, and Jules Vasquez has questions. Here's his story:..

Santa Teresa Villagers Say Police Inspector Stole Their Rosewood
Residents of Santa Teresa Village in the Toledo District say a policeman stole logwood from them. The Quiche Ha Community Based Enterprise says that a lone officer, an Inspector who is from Toledo, went to their village and took Rosewood which they had stored up. The Quiche Ha chairman says the cop took what was theirs without authority. Here's what he told PG TV: Pablo Max, Chairperson - Quiche Ha: "Right now our concern is that a police officer was involved in getting into our area. We are saying that he was stealing Rosewood from our area without our permission."

Travel To Mexico Made Easier
Belizeans who travel very regularly to Mexico can now get a Regional Visitor Card to cut through the immigration red tape. The card - known as the TVR - is free and can be obtained at the Chactemal Immigration office at Belize's northern border. It allows cardholders to travel up to 7 consecutive days to the Mexican states of Campeche, Quintana Roo, Chiapas, Tabasco and Yucatán. It is not valid for any other state in Mexico. To get the Card, Belizean nationals must present a valid passport and a photocopy of the ID page. Children and minors must present the proper authorization from both parents or a legal guardian certified by a JP. The card is valid for 5 years.

Medfly Detected In The South
It's bad news for Belize agriculture tonight because Mediterranean fruit flies - medflies for short - have been found the south. According to BAHA, medflies have been detected in the Sapodilla Cayes, Dump in the Toledo District and Hopkins Village in the Stann Creek District. So, now BAHA has started an eradication campaign, meaning fruit stripping, increased trapping and chemical controls in Hopkins and the Sapodilla Cayes.

Orel Targetted
Orel Leslie was twice acquitted of the same murder - most recently in July of 2018. That was for the killing of James Noralez. He's been a free man for the past 10 months, but on Sunday morning, police say someone tried to take the 30 year old's life. It happened on Bocotora Street near the Michael Finnegan market. He was driving on Bocotora street when 6 shots rang out. Leslie escaped unhurt but police say he didn't want to make a complaint:

Danny Mason's New Imported Attorney
Back in March of this year, William Danny Mason and his 4-co-defendants Ashton Vanegas, Keron Fernandez, Terrence Fernandez, and Ernest Castillo, began standing trial without jury in front of Justice Antoinette Moore in the Belmopan Supreme Court. The court heard extensive evidence led by DDP Cheryl-Lynn Vidal herself, in which the prosecution was attempting to prove that Mason and these others were guilty of the July 2016 beheading of Pastor Llewellyn Lucas.

Getting to know your beach buddies
There is nothing more relaxing than a stroll on the beach. There is something about the vast expanse of the horizon that allows your worries to drift over that unseen ledge, temporally disappearing from heart and mind. These little beach buddies are a delight to watch, and you may wonder just who are these new found feathered friends!

What's newly opened and fun in Belize??? Placencia + Ambergris Caye
Belize is so small, and realistically, it changes pretty slowly all things considered - but it is amazing how many new little places crop up all the time. Thankfully, at this time, they are almost exclusively mom-and-pop places like the history of Belize has always had (I can only think of Losers and Hilton's Mahogany Bay as chains that have opened in the country recently - yes there is talk of more but it'll be a while.) Because all the new stuff makes my head spin, I find it helpful to keep a record of new places as they open. Here are the new places in the last couple months in Placencia and Ambergris Caye! ***HERE is my last update from February 2019 - a couple places were mentioned in the this post that are here again, but they weren't quite open yet :)

An Ancient Maya Ballgame Is Being Revived Across The Mundo Maya – And Belize Rules It!
It’s with no small amount of pride and joy that we congratulate Belize’s Ek’ Balam, aka the Black Jaguars in Mayan, on bringing the Third annual Pok Ta Pok World Cup home after a gruelling regional competition held in El Salvador from 29 April to the 5th of May 2019. We’re also happy to report that the captains of the losing sides were allowed to live. For the uninitiated, Pok Ta Pok is an ancient Maya ball game played by two opposing teams using only their hips to pass and shoot a heavy solid rubber ball down a playing court.

Belize: The Best Place To Travel In June For Adventure
On the vacation calendar, June is an odd month. Too early for school vacations and too late for springtime festivities like Easter and Carnival, June is sometimes a bit of a misfit. But precisely because it occurs during the “low” travel season, June is one of the best months to visit Belize. June is a bit of a transition month in Belize as the country is moving into its “green” season. Belize receives roughly eight inches of rain in June, but most of that falls overnight or in brief downbursts during the hottest part of the day. Visitors to Belize can easily wait out the brief afternoon showers to enjoy a full day’s worth of exploring and traveling in the country.

Commmonwealth observer group describes referendum in Belize as ‘credible, transparent and inclusive’
An interim statement released by Commonwealth Observer Group (COG) chairman and former Bahamas prime minister, Hubert Ingraham, laid out the group’s initial observations. Ingraham described the vote as “credible, transparent and inclusive.” The results revealed that 55,388 people voted yes (or 55.37 percent) and 43,028 voted no (44.63 percent). The official turnout was 64.93 percent. COG’s conclusions stated, “Belizeans who took part in the process had the opportunity to express their will and exercise their franchise” and that the outcome “reflects the view of the majority of Belizeans who voted.”

Belize to take the Guatemalan dispute to the ICJ
In the Referendum Election held in Belize, Wednesday May 8, 2019, approximately 65 percent of the registered voters or 148,500 cast their vote. The results were yes-53,388 and no-43,029, out of 96,417 of the total votes that were cast. This turnout percentage was even higher than the number of Guatemalans that voted on this same issue on April 15, 2018. Only about 26 percent of Guatemala’s 7.5 million registered voters voted. Before and after Belize’s independence in 1981, the People’s United Party (PUP) and the United Democratic Party (UDP), were grappling with the question of taking this claim to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Eventually, they both decided that this was the best way to resolve this dispute.
