The Caribbean Sea

A middle level to upper level trough extends from the Florida Keys, across NW Cuba, across and beyond the northern half of Guatemala, into the eastern Pacific Ocean.

The monsoon trough is along 09N/10N from 74W in Colombia beyond western Costa Rica, into the eastern Pacific Ocean. Scattered to numerous strong rainshowers are in Lake Maracaibo in NW Venezuela. Scattered to numerous strong rainshowers are in the coastal waters and coastal plains of Central America on the eastern Pacific Ocean side, from the Costa Rica/Panama border to the Gulf of Tehuantepec of southern Mexico.

Scattered strong rainshowers are in the west central Caribbean Sea from 13N to 16N between 77W and 80W.

Broken to overcast multilayered clouds, and widely scattered moderate to isolated strong rainshowers, are covering the areas that extend from 15N to 23N between 63W and 83W, including: Jamaica, Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and surrounding islands and waters.

A weak and narrow ridge along 28N will maintain moderate to locally fresh trade winds across much of the basin through the week. Broad low pressure, in Central America and in the adjacent eastern Pacific Ocean waters, will help to produce rainshowers and thunderstorms in the western Caribbean Sea for the next several days. A tropical wave will approach the Tropical North Atlantic Ocean by late week. Fresh to strong winds will prevail in the Gulf of Honduras and the adjacent Yucatan Basin from Friday night through Saturday night.

On Ambergris Caye this morning it's sunny and the sea around our barrier reef is calm. The breeze is from the East at 8mph and today's expected high temperature is 87 f. Just about perfect.

As you can see, the cloud activity in the Caribbean that brought that soft start to our rainy season, has now moved further away into the central Caribbean. The main ITCZ activity is still to the south of us. Only a small amount of rain near PG this morning. There is significant ITCZ activity over parts of West Africa, where is where Hurricanes usually start, but none at present. There have been hurricanes in April, in fact one started in the Pacific, then very unusually crossed into the Caribbean, turned and came across Belize, and I believe the first ever tropical storm to be named when it was already on land. There is right now, in that heavy cloud down off El Salvador, you see in the below picture, the first Pacific INVEST 91E but no other details.

Looks like today will be mainly sunny, white clouds will build later this morning, I think only a small chance of any rain today.

Parts of west Cayo and the mountains have had some significant rain and thunder, out of this swellup, but that will probably be reducing now. Wind and rolling thunder along the Macal, south of Santa Elena. Still hopeful for the wet stuff.
