San Pedro Men Still Missing: 1 Vehicle Impounded, 1 Man Detained
It’s been five days since two men disappeared on Ambergris Caye. Silverio Cal and Melvin Montesino were last seen alive on Thursday night heading to the north side of the island. They have not reported to work, nor have they been in contact with relatives. Several searches conducted between miles eleven and fourteen, north of San Pedro Town, have proven fruitless and the families of the men fear that the worst has happened. Investigators have been working around the clock to find out how the men disappeared without a trace. News Five’s Duane Moody headed to the island today and found that a vehicle had been impounded and one person detained.
A van has been impounded and one person detained pending further investigation into the disappearance of two men on Ambergris Caye. News Five has been reliably informed that this white van with taxi license plates has been searched and remains in police custody on the island. So, too, is its owner whom it is believed can assist investigators with the case. Twenty-seven-year-old Silverio Cal and twenty-six-year-old Melvin Montesino have not been seen or heard from since last Thursday. Five days and several searches later, the friends, who were en route to the northern part of the island on a motorcycle, have not been located. A missing persons report by Montesino’s mother was made on Saturday.

“Just after seven in the morning, Aida Montesino of a San Pedro address visited the San Pedro Police Station and she reported that she had not seen her son since Wednesday the thirteenth of June. His name is Melvin Alexander Montesino, twenty-six years of a Sea Star Street address in San Pedro. He is of Hispanic descent, medium built and about five feet eight inches in height. What we understand is that on Thursday at about nine p.m. he was at his address along with some friends when he received a call and thereafter departed that location along with another friend on board a motorcycle. That was the last time that he was seen in the area of San Pedro.”
There is speculation as to what may have befallen Cal and Montesino. In San Pedro today, residents theorize that the men may have been killed as a result of their alleged involvement in underworld activity. While police have not confirmed this, several attempts have been made to locate the missing men.
“The family members and the police have organized several searches. Information they received was that he went to the north side of San Pedro so the family members and police conducted a search between eleven and fourteen miles north of San Pedro where up to now it has proved fruitless.”
“Sir, is it known if the missing person is known to have been involved in illicit activities on the island? And is it from the way how you’re presenting it, the family thinks he is already dead?”

“Well the mother mentioned that the last time she saw him was on Wednesday. The other friends that were along with him in the apartment as he is the manager of an apartment building and he left from there on Thursday night along with another male person, Silverio Cal.”
Cal is originally from Punta Gorda and did masonry on the island; meanwhile, Montesino is a mechanic. So why did they head to the north side of the island?
ASP Alejandro Cowo
“There is no indication that they went there for any function or any business. All we understand is that he had received a call and he told them that he was going on that location.”
