Hi, we are a couple of 50 years old each and we are tired of life in the Northeast USA. We both want a warm beach to retire to with a safe community and other expats from around the USA and world.

I am retired and currently get about $2700 monthly with more to come in the future from retirement investments. . Wife can't retire yet, but would be willing to go if there was some work to be found for some extra money on the island.

Of course we would do a long term rental before we bought property there and made the full commitment.

I've heard the cost of living per month is reasonable and AC is rated up there with some of the best places to retire to. We would probably want a 2 bedroom place so we would have an extra bedroom if our grown children came to visit. How much does it cost to live a modest life on the island? Where are the best places to live? Do you need a car, or would a golf cart be sufficient?

Beach or pool by day, maybe a couple of meals out a week, some entertainment on weekends?

Also for those who migrated from the US, what do you do in terms of moving there? Dual citizenship? (not sure how this works)

How is the healthcare? We are both relatively healthy but we are both 50 so healthcare is a concern.

any comments would be appreciated.

Your wife cannot work until you either get residency which can take years at this point or apply for and get a work permit. Some jobs expats cannot get at all and those available are supposed to be offered to Belizeans first. It can be done but pay scale is way substandard from what you may be thinking in US terms. Others can speak better to the actual cost of living On the mainland you could live on the 2700 comfortably

Speaking about Healthcare - Belize has a form of socialized medicine and some/many things are free. Many people (most expats) prefer to go to private doctors and clinics - the cost for those services is super-reasonable. Expect an office visit to a private doctor to run from $30-60 Belize (15-30 US) depending. There are two poly-clinics on AC. One is government, the other a recently opened private one. There is a large government hospital in Belize city and there are two larger private clinic/hospitals in Belize City as well. I've been treated (had surgeries) in both of the private clinics and was very comfortable with the facilities and results. Not expensive at all. (Gall bladder surgery - all costs together - ran about $4,000 US). For complicated surgical/medical things some people go to Merida, Mexico where there are excellent big medical facilities. There are also well regarded medical facilities in Chetumal. Again, very very reasonable costs. Dentistry is also good and affordable here.
