Belize will host the XIX Central American Men’s and Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship from Friday, August 16th to Sunday, August 18th at Old Belize’s Kukumba Beach in Belize District. Both male and female teams from the seven Central American countries (Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama) will be participating in the tournament.

Games will start at 9AM each day and run through 6PM, with matches on two sand courts. The entrance fee is $10 for a full day of international beach volleyball action. Representing Belize in the female category are Clara Sabal and San Pedro resident Emma Hoare, while Belize’s male team includes Bryton Codd and Francis Hauze, and Michael Jenkins and Edgar Martinez.

The Belize Volleyball Association (BVA) is asking all volleyball fans to come out and support the Belize teams during the three days of high-level beach volleyball action. Belize has some very strong competitors who have been training with Cuban Coach Juan Carlos Perdomo since the beginning of the year. Belize’s athletes are well-prepared and have shown excellent results in international tournaments so far this year. “After Francis Hauze and Michael Jenkins brought home the bronze medal from the U-21 Central American Beach Volleyball Championship in Guatemala last month, all players and fans are excited and ready for more. Belize is ready to go for the gold!” states the BVA.

Belize Gets Off to Bumpy Start in CA Volleyball Championship

Sports fans, get ready for high-energy fun this weekend.

The 19th Central American Men and Women's Beach Volleyball Championship kicked off Today at Old Belize's Kukumba Beach.

Six Central American countries are competing for the gold. Belize is fielding three teams they're counting on your support to raise their morale and land them on the podium. We visited today and saw them in action.

Micheal Jenkins, PLAYER, team #2 Belize
"It's the 19th Central American beach senior championships so all Central American countries are here except Panama. Most countries have sent two teams for both categories: male and female. As you can see games are being played simultaneously on both courts. Belize, we have our two male teams team 1 and team 2 and one female team and we're already trying our best to keep the medal here in Belize."

Allan Sharp, President, Volleyball Association.
"Well we started this morning. We have all the central American countries here except Panama who couldn't come as a last minute pull out due to finances. Other than that we have nine female teams and ten male teams."

"Our girls have alot of experience they have unfortunately not been able to practice as long as they boys have so they are going to have to overcome that challenge but they have experience, they know what to do."

"Our team is being prepared by an excellent coach from Cuba. our males in particular have been preparing since February and last year with even a previous Cuban coach unfortunately we mix up indoor and beach unlike most of these players here who are strictly beach players year round. Some of them are just beach players that's all they do throughout the year country to country playing in beach volleyball competitions. That said we feel like we have a strong chance again the males have been preparing doing some international tournaments and a continental tour where we've done very well, so we look forward to them being able to perform here at home."

Micheal Jenkins, PLAYER, team #2 Belize
"It's old Belize It's nice weather, it's the beach. Beach volleyball is a fun sport. It's a very fast paced sport and I mean support your Belizean athletes. We're out here trying our best to represent the country and I mean the support and everything from the crowd really helped this morning our game against Honduras and the guy's game against Honduras as well the crowd really helped us to push and fight hard. So tomorrow if it's a bigger crowd it will help a lot more and tomorrow both teams have two games again so you won't miss anything and there are more games again tomorrow and Sunday as well because Sunday is the finals."

Regrettably, today wasn't good at all for Belize. Honduras's males defeated Belize in three sets in the first match of the day. And then in female play, Nicaragua defaced Belize in two sets. And then Nicaragua's males defeated Belize in two sets as well.

But, hope springs anew tomorrow, and the entrance fee for a full day of international beach volleyball action is $10.

Nicaragua Dominates Beach Volleyball Championship

Belize hosted the 19th Central American Men and Women's Beach Volleyball Championship over the weekend. All Central American countries minus Panama were present and brought both male and female teams.

Belize fielded three teams, two male and one female, but none of them placed - still, their performance was far superior to that of previous years.

Ultimately both Nicaraguan male and female teams placed 1st place, both Guatemalan teams came in 2nd, and both Costa Rican teams placed 3rd.

The Belize Volleyball association was highly commended by the international committee for the layout and the organization of the event.

19th Central American Beach Volleyball Championship

The 19th Central American Beach Volleyball Championship ended yesterday with Belize Team 1 placing fifth. First, second and third prize for both male and female went to Nicaragua, Guatemala and Costa Rica respectively. We spoke to Allan Sharp, President of the Belize Volleyball Association, who told us what lessons have been learned during this weekend’s games and how they are moving forward.

Allan Sharp, President of the Belize Volleyball Association: “I think had we had more experience, had we had more international experience going into this tournament especially if it was in the last month it would have very much helped our team to place higher. The top two teams that were placed were just recently in the Lima Pan American Games so they are peaking in their competitive level. The last international tournament we went to was a few months ago so that definitely affected us so we need to improve there. Like I said the guys especially did much better than before and we see that we were playing against teams that were full-time volleyball players in the male top teams are full-time volleyball players and then the female they may not be full time but they’re almost full-time volleyball players so I think we have to put a lot more emphasis on sport and trying to make sure that if we plan to compete at the medal area in any sport the players need to be full time.”

According to Sharp, while there is no shortage in the talent pool in volleyball, there is a need for better systems and mechanisms in Belize to enable the players.

Allan Sharp, President of the Belize Volleyball Association: “We have to get together as a sporting community and try to expose the role that sports can play in society, the important role, the very important role that it plays in society and second then to convince government that they must invest and be a partner, not the sole person because everybody sometimes or some people think that the government is supposed to pay but they have to be a part of it but I can’t see them taking over the whole cost so therein again comes the community. These players that are going to be full time have got to be paid by somebody and the only place it can come from is government and private sector. But both sides need to see results, both sides need to have players that are committed, both sides have to see the good that is going to come to the society.”

The Championship was held from August 16 to 18 at the Kukumba Beach at Old Belize.
