Meet the UDP Leadership Convention 2020 Candidates!
February 9, 2020 has been set as the date for the ruling United Democratic Party’s (UDP) National Leadership Convention. The announcement was made on Saturday, August 10th, during the party’s National Party Council meeting. The anticipated convention will take place at the Belize Civic Centre in Belize City, and the two candidates contending the leadership post are Honourable Patrick Faber and Honourable John Saldivar, two senior UDP ministers. Faber is currently the Area Representative for Collet, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Party Leader in the UDP.

Public officer caught in drug bust
On Wednesday, August 21st San Pedro Police searched the residence of 41-year-old Victor Lara and found a large amount of Marijuana, amounting to 89 grams. At the time of the search, there were a group of persons in the household, and as a result they were all detained. These include an employee of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Errol Sebastian, along with Lara, 40 year old American National Breea Stanke, 34-year-old Alex Salazar, 42-year-old Sebastian Young, 25-year-old Marcus Nuñez, 30-year-old Joslyn Daniels, 28-year-old Hilberto Hoare, and 30-year-old Camille Bodden. They were all charged for Possession with Intent to Supply, and because there is no Magistrate available on the island, they were arraigned at the Magistrate Court in Belize City on Thursday, August 22nd.

Just to let fellow avid-readers know, that they sell books at Roaring Creek's Frogman store. I got a lovely large color atlas a Dorling Kindling (?) version - for $10 Bze. Also a biography, and Mark Twain book... Clemens did write a collection of stories about Central America - think he had been in Honduras. Many Grisham and other mystery books, fiction. Would say half of selections there is fiction. Many cooking books also.

On August 17, 2019 at 8:43pm Miss.Maritza Campos mother of Miss.Jasmine Campos brought the attention to the National Queen of the Bay committee that her daughter will no longer be taking part on any activites as Miss.Queen of the Bay and with her consent is giving up her reign. Which is very self explanatory that she is no longer Miss.Queen of the Bay 2018-2019, with that stated ; The corozal Queen of the Bay committee works with contracts that has to be signed by all delegates before venturing into the Journey of the pageant. Which means that this organization has policies that must be followed by all Delegates and acting Queen of the Bay.

BWS Notice: Planned water interruption to the entire Corozal system from 6:00 am to 10:00 am, Sunday Aug 25, 2019. Areas to be affected: San Joaquin, Calcutta, Carolina, Ranchito, Corozal Town, South End, Xaibe, San Andres, and Halls Layout.

Two die in traffic accident in Spanish Lookout
Two persons lost their lives earlier tonight as a result of a road traffic accident. One of the persons has been identified as Corporal Leonard Puc. The accident occurred in Spanish Lookout in the Cayo District.

18 year old Derry Bennett charged for the murder of Ofelia Cruz
Mexican national Ofelia Hernandez Cruz lived in Belize for years with her husband; he is the caretaker at a property in an isolated area of Sand Hill Village. But as Cruz was home alone on August 13th, she was attacked by two young men who came looking for her husband’s licensed shotgun. They were able to retrieve the weapon, but not before callously taking the life of the elderly woman when she was hammered over the head. Cruz was rushed to the K.H.M.H., but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Central Bank boasted that the APSSS would enhance “the safety, reliability and efficiency of the financial system’s payment infrastructure.”

The New River Is Deathly ill
As recently as today, Friday, the Reporter travelled to Orange Walk where the disturbing condition of the New River shows no sign of improvement. Our reporter was told by sources that even crocodiles have died, and one manatee near the Tower Hill Bridge. From the bridge, observers can see the river covered with filthy scum, and massive fish kills continue to be reported.

Tropical Storm Dorian forms east of Lesser Antilles; Will another soon follow near Florida?
As the Atlantic hurricane season enters a "tropical red zone," a new tropical storm has formed east of the Lesser Antilles, and another depression or tropical storm may soon follow near Florida. On Saturday afternoon, the system east of the Lesser Antilles was named Tropical Storm Dorian by the National Hurricane Center. The area being monitored near Florida has been dubbed Invest 98L by the National Hurricane Center. The center of the disturbance was located over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream as of Saturday night.

Four CARICOM Members on Trump’s Drug Smuggling List
The United States has named four Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries, the Bahamas, Belize, Haiti and Jamaica, as major drug transit or illicit drug-producing countries. President Donald Trump named these countries, among a total of 22, in his “Presidential Determination on Major Drug Transit or Major Illicit Drug Producing Countries for Fiscal Year 2020.” The other countries named by Trump are Afghanistan, Bolivia, Burma, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Laos, Mexico, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela.

Water-landing drones fly BVLOS missions over marine reserve against illegal fishing and pro-biodiversity
Two units of amphibian Aeromapper Talons were utilized successfully during a set of trials during an expedition to beautiful Turneffe Atoll in Belize, in a work lead by the Zoological Society of London and the Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association. The drones, built by Canadian company Aeromao, were used to detect and document illegal fishing activities and ecology research toward conservation efforts. The Turneffe marine protected area (MPA) in Belize, was delineated in 2012, but is difficult to manage, in part due to illegal fishing, its remoteness, and high running costs.

We felt like we were pretty much the only people there and the water was warm and crystal clear! Most perfect day out on the water! Definitely one of the highlights of our trip!
