Dear Doctor Love, My son tells me he hates me. He’s said it twice, and I don’t know how to respond. Do you have any thoughts on what I should do? /s/Unsigned. Dear Unsigned, Few things hurt a parent like hearing the words “I hate you,” from their child but they are only words, despite the intensity you think is behind them. A Sidewalk Stroll In Beach Town Belize
People are always fascinated to find out that we have just one road and one sidewalk where I live in Placencia, Belize. The sidewalk runs north to south and is sandwiched between the road and the beach, the three running in parallel for about two miles in the heart of our little village. Historically, our sidewalk has actually been famous, as it’s been in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the world’s narrowest main street. In true Caribbean fashion, its foundation is made of broken conch shells. There is something truly delightful about getting a seaweed shake from The Shak near the point (the very end of the peninsula) and wandering up the sidewalk with my little dog,

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving in Placencia and The Southern Barrier Reef
The Belize Barrier Reef is one of the greatest ocean wonders in the world. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the second-largest barrier reef in the world. If you’re visiting Belize, don’t miss your opportunity to explore the Reef. Teeming with live corals and vivid aquatic life, it is a spectacular destination for any scuba diver, snorkeler or sea kayaker. Placencia is a lively area that’s popular with visitors from around the world. You can find beaches, dining, and shopping in the heart of Belize’s vacation area. Placencia has over 16 miles of unspoiled beachfront and it is a great place to start your Belize adventure.

What Is Glover’s Reef Atoll? And Why Is It So Special?
Glover’s Reef is one such atoll located approximately 22 miles (35 km) offshore from mainland Belize. Glover’s Atoll is part of a protected marine reserve called the Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve (GSSCMR), one of the most beautiful and eco-diverse regions of the reef. The clear water, white sandy beaches, and abundance of fish and other marine life make Glover’s Reef one of the most popular scuba diving and snorkeling sites in Belize. Today, Glover’s Reef Atoll is an oval ring of coral measuring some 54 miles (87 km) in circumference around what was once an island. Inside Glover’s reef, there are more than 700 “patch” reefs or isolated stands of coral, including delicate fan corals and squat brain corals. These corals are why Glover’s Reef is such a biodiverse region. Everything from spiny urchins to huge schools of curious parrotfish uses the coral to hide from predators, lay eggs, and search for food. Divers have spotted stingrays, sharks, sea turtles, and rays in the reef, but it is the springtime visitors that get the most attention.

Tips for Solo Travellers Visiting Belize
Many solo visitors like to visit Belize outside of the major holidays like Christmas and Easter. If you come during the “off season,” you can save on lodgings, and airfare is often cheaper as well. Some of the best months to visit when it’s less crowded are January, February, and after Easter. And don’t worry about meeting people or making friends! Belize is world-famous for its friendly locals. Belize is still far enough off the beaten path that it feels like a small town. And with everyone speaking English, you’ll never have any problems striking up a conversation. If you’re flying into Belize, you’ll land at the Philip Goldson Airport. It’s sometimes called the Belize City Airport, but it’s actually located about nine miles north of Belize City in a village called Ladyville.

ADO Bus from Cancun to Belize City
Belize is located just south of Mexico’s famed Yucatan Peninsula, so many travelers are interested in information on how to get from Cancún to Belize City or vice versa. The cheapest option by far is to take the bus. The ADO Bus company operates the sole Cancún-Belize City route with an express service that operates each way twice per day. From the main bus terminal in Cancún, the bus leaves at either 7:30 AM or 10:15 PM. The busstops at Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and then Bacalar before crossing the border into Belize. The bus also makes brief stops in Corozal Town and Orange Walk Town before arriving at the central bus terminal in Belize City. Transit time is approximately eight hours.

Getting to Belize From Europe
Due to Belize’s location in Central America, there are no non-stop flights to the country from Europe. The good news, however, is that it is now easier than ever for people in Europe to enjoy an unforgettable vacation in Belize. As a former British colony, Belize has always been a popular destination for Britons. American Airlines now offers direct flights to Belize that depart from London’s Heathrow Airport and make a stop in Miami, Florida before continuing on to Belize. Flights to Belize depart four times per week from Heathrow and have only a short layover in Miami before continuing directly to Belize City.

Restorative aquaculture: can farming shellfish and seaweed provide habitat benefits?
While aquaculture is often associated with degrading water quality, invasive species introductions and the destruction of important coastal habitats, increasing evidence suggests that well-designed and managed aquaculture – particularly of shellfish and seaweeds – can provide ecosystem services including habitat benefits for fish and other marine life. Working alongside key partners around the world, The Nature Conservancy is combining global-scale synthesis science and on-the-ground projects that address remaining scientific questions around the habitat value of shellfish and seaweed aquaculture.
