The Caribbean Sea

Tropical Storm Karen is in the SE Caribbean. A surface trough extends from the west Atlantic across the Bahamas, to the Florida Straits near 24N80W to the eastern Gulf near 23N86W. Scattered showers and tstorms are seen south of Hispaniola, the Mona Passage and eastern Cuba. Scatterometer data depicts light to gentle winds across most of the basin, except the eastern Caribbean near T.S. Karen.

Karen will change little in intensity as it moves 26.5N 65.5W early Fri, and continue to 27.0N 67.0W early Sat. Otherwise, a fairly weak pressure pattern with light and variable winds and low seas will prevail across the western and central Caribbean through Thu, with more typical conditions and trades returning by the end of the week as high pressure builds N of the area in the wake of Karen. A tropical wave may reach the Tropical N Atlantic waters by the end of the week.

Tropical Storm Jerry will continue on a northwesterly path through Sunday night before gradually turning north, then northeasterly this week. This path would take the storm close to Bermuda Tuesday night. It's possible that Jerry regains hurricane strength by this time. Jerry will threaten Bermuda with heavy rain, some flooding and mostly minor wind damage during this time. Jerry will then quickly accelerate away from Bermuda on Wednesday and Thursday as it transitions into a non-tropical cyclone and becomes absorbed in the westerlies.

Tropical Storm Karen formed east of the Lesser Antilles early Sunday morning. Karen's circulation is now west of the Lesser Antilles but will continue to bring gusty winds and heavy rainfall to Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago through Sunday night. The storm will take a turn northward Monday toward Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. With moderate wind shear over the storm, Karen should remain a tropical storm as it passes over Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands Tuesday.

Another tropical system, just off the African coast, strengthened into Tropical Depression 13 Sunday evening. If the depression becomes a tropical storm, it will be named Lorenzo. This storm should take a west-northwestward path over the open waters of the Atlantic and not be an immediate threat to land.

There has been a significant change in our weather over the last couple of days, not that you might notice, but there is no Caribbean winds. The tiny movement of Caribbean clouds are away from Belize. There is a significant air movement up from the south over southern Toledo, and other cloud pushing in from the west. The surface wind over Belmopan is the SW 'Tiger' wind from the mountains. Very little rain around anywhere.

Looks like another hot day, hopefully, some easterly wind will develop later today, not expecting much, of any rain.

There are 3 named storms out there, none threatening Belize. TS JERRY, TS KAREN, and TS LORENZO.

I do not see Karen as being a TS or developing, but they do expect Lorenzo to develop into a hurricane in the mid Atlantic.
