MONITORING THE POSSIBILITY FOR DEVELOPMENT OF A TROPICAL SYSTEM CLOSE TO BELIZE

The National Meteorological Services of Belize and the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) are in discussion regarding ongoing computer models which are predicting that a tropical system could develop within our region, close to Belize somewhere near to Honduras/Nicaragua by the weekend or very early next week. The models will be better able to predict the possibility for the development of a tropical system and a projected path between today and the upcoming days. The Met Office will be consulting with the National Hurricane Centre and will back brief NEMO today.

All are advised to increase your state readiness for possible tropical cyclone activity, i.e. tropical depression, tropical storm or hurricane. The NEMO Emergency Hotline is 936.

This precautionary notice serves to give the public as much lead time as possible in the event a tropical system does in fact develops. NEMO at this juncture based on what the models are forecasting prefer to err on the side of caution. Weather systems are very unpredictable and the weather situation can change rapidly especially during the month of October.

Advance warning to people in flood-prone areas, farmers, fishers, and people on the islands remain vigilant and be prepared.

The National Meteorological Service will continue to study the models and consult with the National Hurricane Center. NEMO will keep the general public updated on any further developments. The public is advised to stay alert. NEMO across the country has been placed on alert as we continue to plan for the worst whilst we continue to hope and pray for the best. Please adhere to the official releases from the National Met Service and NEMO.

ADVISORY #1 - FRIDAY 11TH OCTOBER, 2019

NEMO STILL MONITORING POTENTIAL FOR DEVELOPMENT OF A LOW PRESSURE AREA NEAR TO BELIZE

The National Meteorological Services of Belize and the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) hereby advises the general public that a broad area of low pressure is expected to form over the western Caribbean Sea during the weekend. This system is forecast to move westward toward Central America early next week, and some development is possible if the low remains over water while moving near the coasts of Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize.

* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...near 0 percent. * Formation chance through 5 days...low...20 percent. If the prediction changes for the worse, considering all the factors, by Tuesday we might be facing a significant threat. All members of society are advised to review their plan and make all necessary preparations. Public Officers are advised to be prepared for possible NEMO emergency duties by early next week. All are advised to use the weekend to prepare, review your family emergency plan. People in flood-prone areas, farmers, fishers, and people on the islands need to remain vigilant and be prepared.

The NHC in its two day advisory makes no mention of this system potentially developing. In its 5 day outlook it has it as a 20 percent chance to develop but it will probably already be over land by then.

One of the most accurate predictors of tropical storm activity is the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and they are predicting that it will move over land within a few days.

NEMO Issues Advisory; Met Service Says No Need to Worry

There is no need to panic at this point says the National Emergency Management Organization. Out of precaution, NEMO issued an advisory earlier today informing that it is monitoring the potential for development of a broad low pressure area near Belize.  The system, should it form over the weekend, is expected to move westward toward Central America early next week.  The chances of it forming over the next forty-eight hours, however, is zero percent.  So what does that mean for us here in Belize?  That’s what Chief Meteorologist Catherine Cumberbatch explained to News Five earlier today, emphasizing that there is absolutely no need for alarm as the models are being monitored closely for any development.  She begins with the weekend weather forecast.

Catherine Cumberbatch, Chief Meteorologist

“First of all, right now, at present, we have a weak tropical wave that is affecting the country.  As I said, weak, and that will cause a few showers and thunderstorms to affect the country.  As for tomorrow, Saturday, we are going, again, for a few showers and thunderstorm to affect mainly the southern part of the country, some coastal areas and inland parts of the country.  That is the weather for Saturday, and our extended forecast is going for shower activity to be generally isolated showers and thunderstorms to be generally isolated over the country.”

Isani Cayetano

“There is an expectation based on the forecast that an area of low pressure can form near Nicaragua.  Can you explain to us what that is and if there is any significance for Belize?”

Catherine Cumberbatch

“Okay, from the National Hurricane Center, they usually issue their report and their outlook for the next five days that a broad area of low pressure is expected to develop near the east coast of Honduras and Nicaragua.  They’re only giving that a very low chance which is twenty percent.  That is just what the forecasting models are showing, that a system is likely to develop on the east coast Honduras and Nicaragua going over the weekend and could probably become something during the coming week.  As you know, our job here is to monitor all systems, especially this time of the year which we are in the hurricane season.  And when you look at the zone where the models are projecting that if something should form east of, we should be even more concerned.  So that is all the concern about.”

Closely Monitoring the Weather… but No System Formed As Yet

According to the NEMO advisory, should the prediction change for the worse, all factors considered, Belize can be facing a significant threat by Tuesday.  Nonetheless, Chief Met Officer Cumberbatch reiterated that nothing has formed thus far.

Catherine Cumberbatch, Chief Meteorologist

“No system has formed so far.  There is no tropical depression, there is no tropical storm, there is no hurricane that formed.  Models are only saying what they are projecting that a system is likely to develop near the east coast of Honduras and Nicaragua by weekend and could probably become something in the coming week.  It has a very low chance, twenty percent.  I repeat again, there is no system at this time that poses no threat to Belize.  There is no tropical depression.  There is no tropical storm.  There is no hurricane.  The models, these are things that project long-term conditions and they are saying there is only a twenty percent chance that something can develop off the east coast of Honduras and Nicaragua by weekend. The National Emergency Management Organization has their own tasks and their task is also to alert the people.  Look, this is what something is likely to happen, so Belizeans, we are in the hurricane season, don’t get too relaxed.  Get your hurricane plan in order, get what you need, the hurricane plan in order, so if something arises, you will be better prepared to handle it and move forward.”

Public officers are advised to be prepared for possible NEMO emergency duties early next week.  Everyone else is advised to use the weekend to prepare and review family emergency plans.

ADVISORY #2 SUNDAY 13TH OCTOBER 2019 as at 8:00 p.m.

A BROAD AREA OF LOW PRESSURE LOCATED OVER THE SOUTHWESTERN CARIBBEAN SEA

The National Meteorological Service of Belize and the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) hereby advises the public that a broad area of low pressure located over the south-western Caribbean Sea continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms. This system is forecasted to move west-north-westward toward Central America, and some development is possible if the low remains over water when it is near the coasts of Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize. Regardless of development, this system could bring heavy rains to portions of Central America during the next few days.

* Formation chance through 48 hours is low to 10 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days is low to 20 percent.

The broad area of low pressure is forecasted to cross Belize late Monday into Tuesday morning. Its approach and passage is expected to bring heavy showers and thunderstorms across the country which could result in potential flash-flooding especially in areas prone to flooding. The National Meteorological Service will continue to monitor this system closely for an additional development before it crosses our shores. People in flood-prone areas, farmers, fishers, and people on the islands need to remain vigilant and be prepared.

Fresh new forecast sends the low overland across Honduras, Southern Belize, Guatemala; and gives it a "zero" chance of formation until it emerges over the Bay of Campeche. It does look like a rain-maker though, and in the south that could be a flash-flood issue.
