It was a shocking news on Caye Caulker when we heard of a stabbing incident that caused one injury and one fatality at the Marin's Residence on Luciano Reyes Street. 17 year old Issac Marin was killed by his cousin Jamie Marin who suffers mental illness. Carlos Marin, brother of the deceased was critically injured and rushed to the KHMH.

Fatal stabbing in Caye Caulker leaves one dead and one injured

The Marin family in the village of Caye Caulker is grieving the tragic death of 17-year-old Isaac Marin. He was stabbed to death while he slept sometime after 1AM on Tuesday, October 22nd, by his mentally-challenged cousin, Jaymie Marin. According to reports, his brother 25-year-old Carlos Marin tried to intervene but was injured. While Carlos was stabilized and transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City, his brother died undergoing treatment at the Caye Caulker Polyclinic.

The Marin family is devastated and trying to cope with their tragic loss. Caye Caulker Chairlady, Seleny Pott-Villanueva, extended her condolences. She stated that such incidents shake the tranquility of La Isla Carinosa and is looking forward to the results of the police investigation. On behalf of the Village Council, Villanueva offered to assist the Marin family in anything they can during this difficult situation.

Mentally Ill Man Kills 17 Year Old Cousin

A young man was killed at "I and I Bar" on Caye Caulker last night. And while that may have you thinking that he died in some drunken brawl, in fact, 17 year old Issac Marin was sleeping in his bed.

He was the son of the bar's proprietor, and how he was killed is among one of the worst tragedies that could befall a family: the killer was his mentally ill cousin.

Here is that story from Caye Caulker.

Cherisse Halsall reporting
A Caye Caulker family is reeling tonight after a cousin killed their son:

17 year old Issac Marin was asleep in his room last night just before 12 when his cousin attacked him. This cousin who had been living with the family for a number of months is reportedly mentally ill. Now the question on the minds of Caye Caulker residents is what pushed this young man, delicate as his mental health may have been, to commit an extreme and fatal act of violence.

Seleny Villanueva Pott, Chairperson, Caye Caulker "It is known that he is a mental patient. What we do know is that he was getting help. He was evaluated and was on treatment."

And while Issac Marin who was asleep was defenseless against his assailant, he was heroically defended by his brother Carlos.

Seleny Villanueva Pott
"What triggered it we don't know what happened. We don't know. One of his elder brother walked in when this was going on and in defense he tried to intervene and that's when the altercation got even bigger and he became involved as well."

Tragic incidents are not common occurrences in this tightly knit community. So, when the village chairwoman got the call last night she felt obligated to be present.

Seleny Villanueva Pott
"Early this morning I'd say thereabout about 12:30am I received a call from one of the family members that were over at the community center saying that her brothers have been stabbed."

"Unfortunately one of them had passed by then and the other one was being worked on and he was stable from last night. Critical but stable. We mobilized transportation. We were trying to get some air ambulance in. Unfortunately we couldn't so we went with boat which is always our mode of transportation out here. So we got him transferred to Karl Heusner around 1:30a.m. 2:00a.m."

Police worked rather quickly to incarcerate the assailant although it is not clear whether he was apprehended or handed over by his family. They have, however, requested that his mental state be evaluated.

Seleny Villanueva Pott
"Whenever incidents like these transpire it shakes the entire community. We believe that in a situation like this it's something that triggered the patient and It could have been worse and were very grateful that we didn't lose more than one person in this unfortunate event."

As for the deceased minor, Issac Marin, the Caye Caulker community can only remember him fondly.

Seleny Villanueva Pott
"I believe he was 17 years old. Very very young guy with a future ahead of him loved fishing. True essence of a key bwoy."

Carlos Marin remains at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in a stable condition.

The cousin who wielded the knife that caused the fatal and non-fatal injuries is currently detained at the Caye Caulker Police station. Indications are that he will be charged attempted murder today, but a psychiatric evaluation will be done before he can be charged for killing Isaac. Police are calling it a death investigation, not a murder.

We note that this is the second day in a row that we are reporting on a family member killed by a relative. On Saturday morning, 66 year old Paul Castillo was allegedly hacked to death by his own son in Corozal.

No one yet Charged for double stabbing in Caye Caulker

Police officers continue to probe into the murder and stabbing incident that claimed the life of 17-year-old Isaac Marin in Caye Caulker. On October 21, Isaac Marin was sleeping in his home on Luciano Reyes Street when his mentally ill cousin reportedly came into the room and stabbed him. As this was happening, Marin’s brother, Carlos, tried to intervene and got stabbed in the process. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Joseph Myvette was able to shed some light on what transpired on Monday night just after eleven o’clock.

ACP Joseph Myvette, Head of National Crimes Investigation Branch: “What the police know so far is that Carlos Marin was socializing with a cousin, one Jamie Marin inside the living room of their home when obviously an altercation ensued and as a result Isaac Marin then got up from where he was sleeping in an attempt to aid his brother and that was when he too was stabbed. The third party, Jamie Marin, also received stab wounds. He had since been treated at the Caye Caulker Polyclinic and is now in police custody whilst Carlos Marin was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he is in a stable condition. We are doing the investigation, recording statements and preparing the file. We were told at some point that the accused person in this crime had some mental issues so that too would be taken into consideration whilst the file is being compiled and then that will be sent to the DPPs office for her direction.”

We will keep you posted as to whether Jamie Marin will be charged for Isaac’s death and Carlos’ injuries.

Police Careful With Case Of Mentally Ill Killer

Last night we told you about the Marin brothers, 17 year old Issac and 22 year old Carlos. The teenager was fatally stabbed while his brother is recovering in the hospital.

It happened in the residence located beneath "I and I Bar" on Caye Caulker, and while last night we reported the story according to the account's of the village chairlady, today police presented a slightly different sequence of events.

ACP Joesph Myvette
"What the police know so far is that Carlos Marin was socializing with a cousin, one Jaime Marin, inside the living room of their home when obviously an altercation ensued, and as a result Issac Marin then got up from where he was to aid his brother and that was when he too was stabbed. The third party Jaime Marin also received stab wounds. He has since been treated at the Caye Caulker polyclinic, and is now in police custody while Carlos Marin was transported to the KHMH where he is in a stable condition."

"We are doing the investigation, recording statements, and preparing the file. We were told at some point that the accused person in this crime had some mental issues so that too will be taken into consideration while the file is being compiled, and that will be sent to the DPP's office for her direction."

Tonight Jaime Marin remains in police custody. He has yet to be charged pending a psychiatric evaluation. Carlos Marin remains at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in a stable condition. It remains to be seen whether Carlos will be charged for the injuries sustained by Jaime during the altercation.

COMPOL Outlines Protocol For Dealing With Mentally Ill Suspect

And while Jaime Marin remains in police custody, there are concerns regarding whether a jail cell is an appropriate location for him given his reported delicate state of mental health.

Earlier today the commissioner walked us through the steps that will have to be taken before Jaime Marin can be charged with either murder or manslaughter in the stabbing death of his cousin Issac.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of police
"We, the police are no in a position to say who has mental health issues. That is a profession that is foreign to us. We would have to rely on the expert opinion from those persons who were trained in those areas, but we can say that of late we have seen a number of those incidences where people are saying that the perpetrator has some mental health issue i.e. the incident in Caye Caulker a couple days ago."

"It is an unfortunate situation, and it is one we are working through the ministry of health to see how they can help us to do the relevant evaluation, write the relevant report, and once that is done then we will then forward the file to the DPP and the DPP is going to make the determination as to whether or not we're going to charge for murder manslaughter or whatever the case may be."

"It is a situation that again is unfortunate, but something needs to be done to see how we can address it and I would want to implore upon families who do have people that exhibit mental health issues that they try to seek medical attention for them to be able to keep them at a state where they will not act out because when they fail to take the medication then you'll see that they begin to act out, and it could reach dire stages and we don't want that to occur."

We'll let you know when he is charged.

Man charged for murder of his own cousin

28-year-old Jaymie Patrick Marin has been formally arrested and charged for the murder of his cousin, 17-year-old Isaac Marin. The victim was fatally stabbed as he slept on the night of Monday, October 21, in Caye Caulker Village. Jaymie Marin reportedly suffers from mental illness, and Senior Superintendent, Hilberto Romero, stated that police are investigating whether he has had violent outbursts in the past.

Sr.Supt. Hilberto Romero, Deputy Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch: “In reference to the stabbing incident that occured in Caye Caulker we have charged Jamie Marin, 28 years Belizean of Caye Caulker for the crimes of murder, attempt murder, grevious harm and use of deadly means of harm. This is after an investigation was conducted and he has now been charged. There was some incident he had with his family members and as a result of that he took out the knives and inflicted the stab wounds to these two persons.”

Jaymie Marin appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charges. He was represented in court by Attorney Hurl Hamilton. Hamilton told us that he was retained yesterday, and that he has concerns over the lack of a proper facility to place his client during his remand, since no bail was offered and no plea was taken.

Hurl Hamilton, Attorney: “From what I was told and I’m no medical doctor and there is no report to substantiate that but from what I was told by the father that he has a history of mental issues and today the learned magistrate ordered a psychiatric evaluation to be done.”

Reporter: But has he been diagnosed before ?

Hurl Hamilton, Attorney: “Not to my knowledge. Not to my knowledge.”

Reporter: And has he had any violent behavior before this ?

Hurl Hamilton, Attorney: “Not to my knowledge. This morning he was arraigned on one count of murder, one count of attempted murder, one count of dangerous harm and one count of use of deadly means of harm. Those charges primarily arose out of a incident that happened in San Pedro between himself and two other individuals. In that incident Mr..Marin has received injuries and he has been taken to the hospital and as we speak the police officers are going to take him to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital before he’s transported to the Kolbe Foundation”

Reporter: What were the extent of his injuries?

Hurl Hamilton, Attorney: “He has some bruises, from what I can see some stitches and he complains of severe pain in the back. What was actually argued today in court is if he could have had alternative accommodation other than Kolbe Foundation. We were trying to get him tot a mental institution here in Belize. Unfortunately there is none and we were trying to seek alternative to prison, unfortunately that is not the case and he has to go to Kolbe Foundation and I am aware that Kolbe Foundation do have psychiatrists that come in from time to time, they do do evaluation and he’s going to be housed in a different area than the regular prisoners but in any event if there was an alternative to prison it would have been much better in my view. I would want to think that the police is going to seek further advice from the DPP’s office. If the evaluation comes back that he is unfit to stand trial then that is a matter for the DPP’s office and by extension the police department. So let’s wait and see what is the outcome, what is the conclusion on that evaluation.”

Jaymie Marin’s next court date will be on January 8, 2020, in San Pedro.
