Tropical Rainstorm Olga moves inland over southern US; Pablo to brush Azores

A late-season tropical storm sprang to life on Friday over the Gulf of Mexico and was given the name Olga, the 17th-named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. And far out over the Atlantic Ocean, Tropical Storm Pablo formed late Friday afternoon.

Olga was a short-lived tropical storm as the system weakened to a tropical rainstorm off the coast of Louisiana on Friday night. Despite weakening, Olga will drench the Gulf Coast to the Ohio Valley and lower Great Lakes through Saturday as it moves northward.

The enhanced downpours could lead to numerous flooding incidents, even in areas experiencing long-term drought.

The last time a storm formed over the Gulf of Mexico this late in the season was when Juan took shape in 1985, according to Philip Klotzbach, a Colorado State University meteorologist.

Meanwhile, a second tropical storm took shape on Friday afternoon.

A rapidly strengthening disturbance became Tropical Storm Pablo on Friday afternoon in the Atlantic Ocean near the Azores.

Pablo poses no threat to the United States or Atlantic Canada, but it will bring some rain and gusty winds to the Azores over the weekend, and shipping in the area can be impacted.

Tropical Disturbance Over The Western Caribbean: In addition to watching Olga race northward this morning, Im also keeping an eye on a tropical disturbance that is located to the southwest of Jamaica. This tropical disturbance is producing some deep thunderstorm activity with an environment that is favorable for development. All-in-all, I do think that this disturbance should be watched closely as it moves in a northwesterly direction this weekend reaching the southern Gulf of Mexico on Monday.

Right now, none of the model guidance are forecasting any sort of development. Given the fact that this disturbance is producing deep thunderstorm activity and the fact that the environment is favorable for development, it is a system that the model guidance may catch on to in the next couple of days.

As we get into next week, the energy and moisture from this tropical disturbance will move northward from the southern Gulf of Mexico on Monday to the northern Gulf of Mexico late Tuesday into early Wednesday. This means that the northern Gulf Coast may see another surge of rainfall and possible gusty winds from Tuesday right through Wednesday. Again, there is the possibility that this disturbance could try to strengthen into a tropical depression or even a tropical storm over the next couple of days and its a system to keep an eye on.

There is the first cold front of the season, coming down over the Gulf, not clear yet how far it will effect, but the easterly Caribbean wind has been stopped over the southern part of Belize. There is significant high level cloud from the NNW which will be effecting our weather today. And there is high level cloud from the SSE over the western Caribbean, causing rain out at sea far from Belize.

Looks like today is going to be a mixture of sunshine and cloud, with the chance of the odd rain shower, possibly more so this afternoon, in west and or south areas.

Rain showers are developing up north, and under that clashing cloud area down south and out at sea.

Sunny with a few cloudy spells today and cloudy tonight. Showers and thunderstorms will be isolated at first, then a few more will develop over northern and inland areas this afternoon and over most areas tonight.
