Current State of the New River
The Department of the Environment (DOE) hereby informs the public, especially residents of Orange Walk Town and those people living in the vicinity of the New River, that the general condition of the river has improved over the past weeks. Since early September 2019, the DOE has been monitoring the water quality of the river near Orange Walk Town on a daily basis and has observed a steady improvement of the river. The improvement is as a result of several factors: (i) the DOE has conducted remedial actions in the river, (ii) inspections of local industries by the DOE and other agencies to address discharge of wastewater, and (iii) the recharging of the river due to localized rainfall in central and northern Belize.

Tourism Talk – Let’s Talk Travel + Tourism
My name is Anoushka De Boucherville-Brandl, and I am the Second Vice President for BHA. If we were to rank the reasons we travel, I’d put “self-discovery” at the top of my list. What’s on the modern traveler’s mind in 2020? GREEN FOR GOOD: I like to define sustainability as ‘luxury.’ Luxury is not necessarily defined as a fancy hotel by Aman or Four seasons… Think about the fervor around single-use plastics. We can leverage sustainability to enhance the guest experience. Tip! – Start an initiative such as planting trees and write a blog about it. This initiative shows that you are putting the effort to help combat deforestation and global warming; hence, you will attract more customers concerned about the state of the planet.

Two Possibly Counterfeit Nike Containers Held At Western Border
Yesterday there were some tense moments at the Benque Viejo Free Zone after an attempt to impose a new charge on tobacco imports. Police had to call out the riot squad to calm down angry importers. And while that was an internal matter between Zone management and importers - tonight, there's a bigger problem. 7News has confirmed that Customs at the border has held back two 40 foot containers bound for the zone.

Man Critical After Surviving Multiple Shots In City
A Belize City man is clinging to life after he was shot yesterday evening in the St. Martin's area. It happened at 6:15 on Lavender Street where residents heard at least 10 shots fired. The target was 27 year old Eric Tillett who was hauled out of the yard with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body, but still alive. He was put into the back of a pickup - which a number of neighborhood men crowded into - and then rushed to the KHMH where he is critical tonight.

Accused Killer Keon Is A Free Man
He's been on remand for a murder charge for over 3 years, but tonight 23-year-old Keon Usher is a free man. That's after he was acquitted in a trial without jury, in front of Justice Colin Williams. Usher was charged with the murder of 25-year-old Nicasio Zuniga. That killing happened in the Martin's Area in 2016. Zuniga had just left his home for the corner store when 2 men rode up on bicycles, and one of them shot him in the head. The cops believed that they made a solid arrest, based on a caution statement given to them by an alleged eyewitness who swore that he heard a single shot, and saw Usher and another man riding off on separate bicycles.

Hundreds of residents were affected and lost household property such as mattresses, furniture, and even car engines. Today, NEMO went in with relief. Cherisse Halsall has more on the flood and the aftermath. It was a vivid and unforgettable image, a tearful pastor and his wife in the grips of loss and incomprehension, as chest high flood waters ripped through their house in the predawn darkness.

The Thorny And Troubling Issue of CSEC
On Friday we told you about the Interpol Cybercrime Capacity Building Project in the Americas. Law enforcement representatives from Belize and the Caribbean learned new techniques to detect and interdict predators engaging in the online sexual exploitation of children. It is a very real and disturbing global phenomenon and Belize is among the countries where it is happening. There haven't been many reported cases of online child solicitation or exploitation of children in Belize but the number of cases reported from homes and communities all over the country are alarming. Courtney Weatherburne takes a closer look at commercial sexual exploitation of children, what the police and other organizations have been doing to address this chronic problem and what gaps need to be closed to better protect children. Here is her special feature story.

New River Renewed
Almost 2 months ago, the New River in the Orange Walk District made national news after it was discovered that this major waterway was severely polluted. Well, the Department of Environment is reporting tonight that the condition of the river has improved significantly since its intervention. The DOE says that since early September, they've been monitoring the water quality near Orange Walk Town on a daily basis, and their tests indicate steady improvement. They attribute these improvements to several factors. The first is the installation of mechanical aerators at strategic locations along the river. Also, the river has been recharged due to the significant rainfall in Central and Northern Belize.

A Decade Later, Still No Justice For Buckley
The last time that Steven Buckley made the news was back in January of 2018. That's when he was calling for the state to speed up the criminal prosecution of the cop who was charged for almost killing him. That happened in April of 2010. Buckley was accidentally shot by a police officer during a routine search. That officer has been identified as Inspector Dennis Lopez. Buckley came to our office today to complain that he has seen Lopez back on the job for the police department even though the case for attempted murder and dangerous harm is still unresolved. He expressed his outrage about that:

CES is responsible for many seminal Belizean records, and captured on vinyl countless legendary performances by some of the best musicians Belize has produced.

The Rights of Refugees
Last night we told about the UNHCR media training on refugee reporting. As we told you, refugees are persons who have no choice but to flee their country in fear of their life. But it is not a bed of roses when refuges get to Belize initially. The process to be recognized as a refugee is a long and tedious one and the time period refugees have to apply is also very short. Janice Marshall, Senior Consultant, UNHCR Belize: "There is a very short time limitation in the Belize refugee act, people who enter the country only have 14 days after they enter the country in which to make their claim for refugee..."

UNHCR Lobbies For 'Fugees
But when refugees finally get settled in, many become active and productive members of communities. Health Care in San Pedro
Depending on where you are in your stage of life, healthcare and medication may or may not concern you. As retirees not yet Medicare eligible, it was a significant concern to us. Additionally, we both have some critical medication needs so forethought and planning was definitely needed. Regardless of your health needs you will need proof of certain vaccinations in order to apply for residence under the QRP, (Qualified Retirement Persons). It is also advisable to see your doctor before leaving the states and consult with them regarding any suggested vaccines. Of the many things that Belize is known for, healthcare is not one of them. There are a couple of doctors on the island and just recently, Belize Medical Associates opened a clinic here on the Caye upping the quality of care for islanders significantly. If you have a cold, strep throat, cuts and bruises or even a broken bone or two you’ll be fine. If you have anything significant like a chronic illness, a heart condition or cancer concerns, you’ll want to look beyond the border of Belize for the best quality care. I say this not to disparage Belize’s healthcare but as a matter of fact when you look at healthcare worldwide.

  • Crank Yanking, 1.5min. If you're driving or riding through the back bush of Corozal District between Corozal Town and Sarteneja, you'll wind up fording two rivers in a distinctly Belizean way – via hand-cranked ferries that run along with thick cables strung from riverbank to riverbank. This throwback to the early days of industrialization owes its existence to the low traffic density plying the roads. With too few vehicles to make building a bridge feasible, the low-tech (and low-impact) human-powered cable ferry was seen as a fine way to ensure that cars, bikes, and motorcycles could get where they needed to go (even if only two at a time).
